Speaker Settings Error

Hey I seem to be having a strange speaker setting problem when trying to play half life 2. I use a 7.1 speaker setup and anytime i try to switch it in the audio menu to 7.1 from 2 speakers it defaults it back to 2 when i exit the menu. I've tried applying first then exiting menu same thing always sets it back to 2 speakers. Even with headphones it defaults from that setting to 2 speakers.

I run a X-fi XtremeGamer card and have made sure the driver is up to date so i don't believe that is the problem though i'm no expert.

So if anybody else has had the problem or knows a way to fix it any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, If I may enter your thread to pose my own problem.

I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS, and the sound keeps cutting out on all 3 OB games. Dunno whats going on. If anyone knows how to, cheers :)

I have 5.1 speakers, and they work 100% fine in HL2 and HL2EP1 - just not HL2EP2/Portal.

If I switch to 7.1 mode, I have the same problem - it auto-reverts to 2 speakers every time I hit "Ok". If I use the command in the console to switch the number of speakers, it will say the change was made, then immediately say it changed to 2 speaker mode.

On top of that, the positional audio is way off! I only get sound from the front 3 speakers (right, left and center) and anything that should be to the right of me "disappears". This is on an Abit IP-35 Mobo with ALC888 on-board sound.

Using the switch in the console "snd_legacy_surround 1" (I think that's what it was) will make the sound come out of all 5 speakers, however it doesn't seem positional - it seems more like all the speakers share too many sounds (things to my right come out of all speakers).

I've seen a couple updates for TF2 that fix sound issues, unfortunately none of them have fixed this one yet.
