This may just be me or it may be a universal Hammer problem, but Sphere brushes are very strange for me. First off, I can't make them in any patch number above 16, and secondly the clip, hollow, carve and vertex functions on a sphere all crash Hammer. They work properly on all other brushes.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a universal problem? If it's a universal problem, then that really SUCKS because in my new mod, the first level is a spherical space ship.

Spheres were not meant to be brushes, no matter what Valve tells you. Valve is wrong.

So, what? I have to buy a $3000 3D program and spend hours toiling over a PRIMITIVE model?? Really, there should be an easier way. I hate Hammer.

Just use lotsa block brushes and arrange them in a spherical pattern. I'd start by making them circular then after my circle is done vertex-edit it into a spheroidical shape.

It's unsuprising that the carve would not work on a shape like a sphere. It doesn't work real well anyway, and the geometic complexity or a sperical brush could easily break their algorithm.
I've used hollow on them successfully, but it produces odd results.
The 16 division limitation is a recent change, right when I started mapping I made a 32 division sphere, the next update it was unavailable.
vertex should still work. I don't get why it wouldn't.

It's theoretically possible to make a displacement surface spere, but nothing is included to do this, and I've not seen any 3rd party tools capable of this either. It would be a lot of work without them.
Obviously, the result could not be anything but world-level geometry. I.E. not animated, tied to an entity, etc.

Hammer is just not a capable enough tool to deal with brush geometry with that level of complexity. I've had rendering errors when I successfully made complex brushes, anyway.

No...all I want to do is slice it in half. I mean, it might be hard, but I was gonna try it...well...for now I guess I'll just use a sucky square brush for my ship. Maybe I'll find a solution around this.

You're trying to carve something in half?

Tried the clipping tool ? You know, the much better, handier tool that you should be using?

I know, I actually had them confused when I wrote that...lol...

clip didnt wrk perfectly for me...had to take a little over half off and then invert the sphere. still ok though

hey i was wondering if u could make a sphere map, kinda like an earth. can u do that?

no, because gravity is always 'down' you cant pull toward any one point, in your case, the center of the sphere...
