with the hl2 release rapidly approaching, and in particular with the preloads going ahead, the number of spoilers posted here (many without tags) seems to be really going through the roof. some even being posted by members with 1000+ posts.

to clarify, i don't consider the data inside gcf files to be 'info released by valve' and hence i don't consider it perfectly acceptable to post about what you've uncovered. i've read a few things that people have found by poking around inside these files that at least warranted tags! :angry:

i can see why so many people have posted 'see you in a few months' posts to announce that the forums will be off limits to them from now on. after over a year of this site being totally anal about anything that might conceivably be a spoiler (don't get me wrong i'm not complaining about that!), it's being ruined in the last few weeks (okay, months ).

As far as spoilers go... it's things you'll see in Binks and Screenshots, ergo they aren't spoilers. Maybe you consider alyx.jpg to ruin the game for you, but we all KNEW Alyx was in the game. Et al concerning other so-called spoilers that really are common knowledge.

All it is is filenames. That's what I meant with Binks and screenshots; most of the stuff in there, we knew was going to be in there.

There's an itchyosaur.jpg, a barneyhelmet jpg, a breenmonitor.jpg, combin_gate_citizen.jpg.

Point is there seems to be jpgs of many many models including bullet shells and guns. Why? I don't know.

There's still absolutely no evidence of a hl2mp in any of these preload files.

Everyone knows Alyx is in the game, everyone knows itchyosaurs are in the game, everyone knows Breen is in the game and everyone knows barneys helmet is in the game. They're hardly spoilers.

I deliberately didn't post the screenshot names of new vehicles or new weapons or new other stuff.

Isn't it a logical assumption to make that it's possible for him to be wearing a helmet in HL2, since he wore one in HL1?

And even if it is a spoiler, woah, pretty major one. Barney has a helmet!

In other words, even if for some reason you did consider it a spoiler, without the context in which it occurs, it's pretty irrelevant (maybe he just loses it, or perhaps it's a large part of the storyline? either way, just knowing that he has one at some point doesn't spoil either of these situations).

For me, Half-Life (and HL2) is not all about story, nor is it all about gameplay or all about... whatever. It's about a combination of these factors - great gameplay and story, in a fantastically vivid world which all makes up the incredibly rich atmosphere. And that's what I'm after.
