The price through Steam has been cut so I have just bought Stalker. Sort of a blind purchase. What do you think about it? Gameplay? Is it good or bad?

It's a great game. You've made a great blind purchase, lucky you.

if your computer can handle dynamic lighting, download a mod called Float32. it improves performance and graphics.

Thank you for the advice. It seems that my machine is powerful enough to run this demanding game, so I'll give that mod a try.

Fantastic game. I wish all my blind buys were as good as yours. You need to give it time though. It seems that most people's first impressions are less than stellar, but then they'll rave about it once they get into it.

Damnit you make me want to buy stalker now. After my next big food buy I'll calculate roughly how much I spend on food per week and see if I have enough.

It is indeed a win game.. and at that price, it's worth it. The beginning is ludicrously hard, but once you get decent armor and a gun, it gets easier...
Till the end, where it gets harder.

If you play at full dynamic shadows, get the Float32 mod. It greatly increases performance and details. Thefloatingpoint.org
By the way, patch your game quickly. You can't use your non-patched save games in the later versions, which offer a lot of bug fixes and performance increases.

I suggest getting ABC mod and then play on the hardest difficulty.
Just found out that the whole Duty base is taken over by bandits and mutants who keep fighting each other when I last visited it. Hard but bloody awesome.

An awesome difference from Oblivion: In Oblivion, characters are simply kept track of, and don't really come to life till you go to the area. In STALKER, all AI are always going all the time, one cool instance was where I saw one of my friends fighting some wild dogs and got killed.. so sad. So I killed the one dog left, and jacked his stuff. I believe I had helped him on a mission or something.. lolz. And when I killed my first exosuit. I sat a little ways away from someone stronger than me, behind him, and sniped him dead. It was soooo cool.

Well, after half an hour of play I think that Stalker is not just another first person shooter. It has that "adventure" flavour that gives you the thrill of exploration. Take your time... move slowly... watch your steps. It's the System Shock mood, if you know what I mean.

It won't freeze. I didn't for me, but there are a few glitches that may happen. Weird lights going everywhere is one I encountered.. And, I THINK it may have destroyed my Hard Drive. Because when I went to restart my computer after having played it, my whole computer crapped out, and I had to send it in. Fixed now, though.
