OK my brother just pre-ordered a 360 and bought xbox360 magazine.

There is an article about using a 360 on an HD TV or a normal TV.

Many of us(including me) were wondering what kind of resolution to expect from 720p, and how it will look on a standard (non-HD) TV

720p = 1280 x 720 pixels

(for comparison the original xbox all games ran at 640 x 480 resolution)

Microsoft says that every xbox 360 game will feature a minimum of 720p and 4x anti-aliasing!

Xbox 360 (magazine) said:
the p in 720p stands for progressive scan, which means that the xbox 360 outputs the on-screen image in one pass - lines 1, 2, 3 etc. - offering an extremely smooth representation of movement and is therefore ideally suited to the medium of videogames, due to its ability to be drawn quickly and digitally without any loss of quality.

Standard Defenition Television is either Pal (Europe) (720 x 576 pixels @ 25 frames per second)

or

NTSC (north america & canada) (720 x 480 @ 30 frames per second)

The french use Secam but who cares about the french

1080i consists of 1,080 interlaced lines in a 16:9 widescreen ratio.
720p is 720 progressive scan lines in a 16:9 widescreen ratio

For gamers looking to hook up the xbox 360 up to a Standard Defenition Television:

Microsoft's Advanced Technology Group has placed one of the most advanced scaling video chips ever made. If you are running on a standard television, it'll convert the HD picture into a crisp 16:9 picture. It's the equivalent of a DVD-quality picture, even on a standard definition set.
Basically its going to look really sharp on a standard TV but will look insane on a HD TV or a PC monitor.

I thought this was already common knowledge?
About HDTV resolutions/progressive scan that is.

Good for the people who don't know yet tho.:)
Not the TV doesn't have to be specifically 1280x720, I've seen HDTVs that have a resolution of 13xx X 76x.:)

All the info you need to know about HDTV, in a concise format.:)

Talking about HD tv's do you guys know of any websites that i can get a 27" HD tv for about £700 in the uk?

Umm.. they say that HD movies look better in interlaced format, but that's total horse shit. TV programs do perhaps, but that's because a lot of American shows are broadcast in an interlaced 29.97 fps format.

Progressive scan is better for both games and moving image.

Oh yeah, 720p being 1280 x 720 is pretty much common knowledge like Gargantou said.

480p/i = 640 x 480
720p/i = 1280 x 720
1080p/i = 1920 x 1080

1080p ftw.

Yea, no, I don't think they were saying that interlaced is better for viewing movies than progressive bro, they were just saying that 1080i is better for viewing movies than 720p. Saying that for movies, the higher resolution is more important than the progressive scan.

yes 1080p is the best

the i in 1080i stands for interlaced. an interlaced picture is better suited for viewing HD movies.

This sentence suggests to me that they're saying I is better than P for movies, not that 720HD is better than 1080HD, which is complete shit, cos since when did movie theatres show movies in an interlaced format lol. The movie in a reel is shown 1 complete frame at a time 24 frames a second.

Since i typed it by hand, several things they said was shortened by me, i put 2 paragraphs in 1 sentance in some cases. and you are right that wasn't entirely accurate. I see how the sentance was misleading and deleted it altogether.

Sorry about that

What I said:
"an interlaced picture is better suited for viewing movies" <WRONG

Here is what they really said:
"Becuase of it's greater resolution 1080i is ideally suited for showing movies, "

(as compared to 720p)

I can definitely see the difference. 720p looks fantastic. Everything is very crisp and defined. It's beautiful.

Microsoft has done a fine job with the 360. I'm pleased with how it turned out.

If you have a credit card or debit card this site is the way forward.

I got my 32" HDTV reduced from £1300 to £650! :D
