I am working on a fictional business, and I cannot find anyone who is willing to give me information of prices of computer parts straight off of the factory. Nor would I think they would tell me their competitive prices.

Anyone know the standard profit % for computer parts? or at least a reasonable guess?

Um, a guy i know sells stuff half the price of off-the-shelf computer stuff, so I guess they'd have to cost even less than that. 25-35% maybe?

Retail shops (not online resellers) make a pretty small amount of profits actually. When I worked at CompUSA, we could see how much CompUSA bought it for, the MSRP and what the actual price was. It obviously depends on who the manufacturer was and what kind of deal CompUSA struck with each different provider, but for things like Cameras they sold them at a ~10% markup (so when they bought a $300 camera, CompUSA would sell it for around $330). With things like video cards or hard drives, I think it was usually around 8%, while things like flash drives, memory cards, etc were ~15%. I think monitors and TVs were anywhere from 8-12%.

I remember being pretty surprised when I first found out, because its not nearly as high as I thought it would've been.

Isn't most profit derived from stuff like usb cables and toner cartridges?

Yeah, cables are marked up quite a bit in general, and ink and toner are too, though not as much if I recall correctly.

I think it varies on the product, like what Viperidae said.
