Star Wars: The Old Republic

I'm one of the people who still can't understand why this game had to be an MMO

I'm happy my first shipment of PC Gamer will be coming by August. Hooray for $5 subscriptions from amazon...

Wait, is it really only 5 bucks a month for the subscription?

Edit: Nvm, you're not talking about the game, you're talking about PC Gamer mag. **** you.

lol.

It will prolly be $15 since that's the industry standard. It's true MMOs suffer from terrible design. I mean I guess it has to suck to design these massive zones full of quests for hundreds and thousands of people with balance issues and a persistent environment. It has to be exponentially more difficult that designing a non-mmo game. WoW had the advantage of going from a very popular franchise with a wide story universe using techniques from a popular multiplayer RPG (diablo 2) and having the amazing designers of Blizzard (there's no lie they make some of the coolest looking stuff around).

Bioware has been making some of the most entertaining RPGs on the market recently and most of them have been pretty exceptional in design. Lucas (though I'm unsure of the breadth of their involvement) has at least had one MMO under its belt to learn from and maybe they can mesh this together into another good MMO for the world to embrace.

A lot of MMOs have come out since WoW and have barely made a dent in the marketshare. If TOR does well enough it will be good for the whole genre.

Wait why is space combat a surprise? They already said we'd get our own ship, not sure what else we were gonna do with it...

When they first announced it, it was only hinted at it being a customizable base. There was no talk of space combat. It's definitely a nice surprise.

Space combat has me interested finally. I'm still going to wait for videos of people playing after release, and possibly a free-trial period before deciding to buy though. The last MMO I ever played had me excited about it before release, but it turned out to be crap. Every MMO I've wanted since then I've waited until after release to see videos and was able to stop myself from wasting money. SWG may have been a failure, but it wasn't in vain. I've saved hundreds of dollars because of the lessons it taught me.

I wouldn't call SWG a failure. It was perfectly fine in its initial form and it had plenty of subscribers. SOE, however, instead of relishing the safety of the niche market, they got too greedy and tried to turn it into a WoW clone. That is why i will never touch another SOE product again. That and the fact that they abandoned The Matrix Online and Planetside.
But that's another story.

Anyway, when is BioWare going to invite some public members to the beta test?
As far as i know, they're in limited testing mode at the moment.

One thing is for sure after watching that video, ToR is an mmorpg. Hopefully a lot of those animations are place holder. I want to see a damn gui.

I am a bit skeptical myself but the more i see of this game the bigger my excitement grows.
It's hard not to get caught up in the hype when you are a fan of the source material as well as the developer.

It is especially the former for me. Like RPS wrote: it's got the noises. It seems to be on rails though, and I don't think this part of the game will be particularly mmo-ish. Still, looks pretty good.

Not a big fan of rails shooters in space... I mean it's IN SPACE.

You know what that reminded me of? The ****ing "space combat" sections in Kingdom Hearts. Remember those? :|

As long as there is some free roam in space. I think SWG needed rail shooter combat, the space fights in that game were ridiculous.

but, yeah, i want some free roam.

I didn't want to judge the space combat video at first because it only shows a few seconds of the gameplay. It looks like that it will be an on rails space shooter after all. Well, this is rather disappointing news. I expected to see some type of free roam as well hyperspace with explorable areas and random encounters. Maybe something similar to or on par with Freelancer even if it had to be instanced. Instead, we get this half assed execution tailored for the casual, brain dead crowd. I was really looking forward to this game but i am now starting to have my doubts.

Bioware posted a video of a dungeon you can do around lvl 30. There have been a couple of previews on it. Video here. I do hope all the talky stuff is skippable when you run this 'flashpoint' a couple of times.

Looks stiff and boring... especially the healer; that looks like borderline torture.

I'll say it again: this should've been a ****ing singleplayer sequel.

Meh looks like standard MMO combat.

Don't have time to watch the whole thing, but it seems like the animation is just pretty bad. Bioware needs to really invest in new animator. It looks like they made the game a little more dynamic... basically more WoW-like in that you move more while fighting. Honestly the game looks better than before, but it doesn't look like a game I'd want to throw $50 and a monthly fee at... and I think that's what they're going to do. Hell it will probably be $60. However, if I was the marketing director or some high up position, I'd suggest they make it something like $30 or $40 and make the subscription $10. That would wholly compensate for the apparent shortcomings and pull over a few million jaded WoW people.

As a person who's played a decent number of MMOs, I can see that this has the makings of something that would sit well in the genre, but it's not anything remotely revolutionary. It hardly even feels like Bioware work... it just feels like another MMORPG with Star Wars painted on.

All this game does is make me a crave a new KoTOR, preferably done by Obsidian rather than BioWare.

I'll also probably try this if there's an open beta, but I doubt I'll like it since I'm not a fan of MMOs to begin with.

Why would you want Obsidian instead of BioWare? I admit KotOR2 was okay (*after restoration mods), but KotOR1, as a standalone unmodded game, was leagues better.

Someone would have to pay me a large sum of money to even consider watching or reading another thing about this travesty let alone play it. There aren't enough negative adjectives in the English language to sum up my feelings about this game.

Great way to waste the rights to a great franchise.

Uh, looks better than the other MMOs on the market.

I have to agree with everybody else. Looks boring as hell.

Because KOTOR2 was written a thousand times better.
Bioware would probably fill the game with corny dialogue, unnecessary sex scenes, exploding enemies, and big titted female characters.

If the Bioware of 2003 made KOTOR3 then I'd probably be on your side, but alas, they've changed for the worse.

Disappointing. Not that I would've played it anyway, MMO's just don't appeal to me at all. I really want a new KOTOR with a totally nonlinear story in which I can travel all over the galaxy and create myself, not being forced to say "Here's your main plot. Make sure you do this, maybe pick if you want to be good and evil or not." Probably never going to happen

^You'd end up with a huge game universe with nothing to do or with almost no personality. It would be boring.

Correct. Having a huge universe in videogames is pointless if there is nothing really important to do. In my opinion, a small but dense universe offers a better and more satisfying gaming experience.

There are few games I can even think of that pull it off. The only ones that come to mind are X3:Terran Conflict and EVE. But this is simply because both are spaceship games; so the slow pace and emptiness fools you into experiencing what you believe to be a simulation of space exploration.

I can't even think of any character driven games like that. Even games like STALKER, Oblivion, and Fallout New Vegas have a driving force and choice.

Some people have had some brutally strong opinions of this game from that movie and I feel like they're unwarranted. Aside from some stiff animations, the game doesn't look any worse than any other MMORPG on the market today. I think it may just be a combination of Star Wars superfanboys combined with those people who hate every single game before it comes out but then buy it down the road because all of their friends did and then praise it.

Really, what we're going to have here is probably one of those most linear MMOs ever created with some decent but familiar gameplay and wonky animations. I wonder when creators of MMOs are going to realize that, while the familiar is popular, a lot of people crave innovation and certainly a little more open ended randomized content. I mean who here played WoW and got bored to death by the predictability of dungeons? The first time through it's so exciting and fun and maybe a few more times after that, but after running the same content 20 or 30 times you just start to hate it. Left 4 Dead had it right in that they created an AI that procedurally changed the environment based on the users. I guess we can't expect everyone to be Valve though, can we?
