Stargate the movie (original)

I just rewatched it for my love for stargate and everything around it. But i realized, how did they not have the time to try every combination possible? Why did they need jackson to point out the last symbol, when they could have just tried every combination they could possibly do? I mean they had decades to experiment.

It might have been because the last combination has to be the same, and that they took decades to make a DHD in the first place. but I see your point.
