Ok.. I *THINK* this is all because of DirectX9. I have no solid proof, just coincidence. So far after installing DirectX9..

Jedi Knight Academy Alpha Singleplayer:
Result: Can't remember but about 30 minutes in the game either freezes causing me to reboot OR it crashes to desktop.

Star Trek - Elite Force2:
Result: Game freezes when it loads the level of you boarding the damaged Federation ship. Forcing me to reboot.

Homeworld2 Demo:
Result: Played the game ok but when I clicked on singleplayer and the intro came up the game froze about 2-3 minutes in and I had to reboot.

... the possibility of Half-Life2 giving me problems seems to be more and more likely. Has anyone else experienced this and have any knowledge to share? Does anybody know about a fix or a patch? Any options I should consider changing anywhere?

help ;(

Played em all except Star trek, they worked fine with me :D...dont worry d00d. I'm on a 9600 pro and a duron, yes DURON! 1.1ghz

Same here. Played through the whole Jedi Academy and Homeworld 2 demo with absolutely no problems.

Erm........reformat before you install HL2.......download all the latest drivers...ect ect.

Thats what im gonna do....i want HL2 to run as fast as possible.

sounds more like you have a overheated gpu or something.. i had those problems in some games, but then i fixed the cooling on my gpu and then everything worked fine

You know, this thread reminds me of when you have insomnia.

When you have insomnia, you tell people and they go "Oh, I just fall asleep whenever my head hits the pillow." In this thread, you say "I've got computer issues" and people go "Nope, all work find for me."

sounds like a PSU problem ...Overheating would give you artifacts first then reboot, random reboots during gaming is usually cause of not enough power on the +12 rail(need at least 15amps)

hehe, i remember when my 5200 U had no cooler, in 10-20 min all the games with good graphics totally freezed my compueter, and even the physical memory of the pc blocked, now it's everything o.
so try cooling your gpuk

i have had dx9 installed for ages on my geforce4 ti4200
and there were problems at the beginning, parts of splinter cell were dodgy, gta3 didn't work properly (and still doesn't :(), but after some changing drivers i found some newer ones that worked! :).

edit: looking at your symptons on your pc, i would definately say it's overheating

yeh, i have this problem right now with my 4200, my fan has broken so i use a desk fan to pump air onto the card when i'm playing games, works fine but is really noisy, at least it doesn't crash, should be getting a radeon 9800 in a few weeks anyway, so that'll be sorted.

Maybe posting in hardware? Tsts, would never had expected it from you ;)
I have all those games running without incident. All some of the most bugfree games I have seen (granted, I havent played the Homeworld 2 demo that much).

yeah D33, you never learn!
use the right forum for christ sake!

;)

oh ya...always install DX9 before you install your card..This is a huge problem with ATI cards sometimes and causes alot of problems.

I've never had an ATI card before.. I heard something about having to uninstall old drivers before installing new ones?

Can someone talk me through this process and what drivers I should get ?

Try this. It sounds like a motherboard issue. Set everything to fail safe defaults, reboot, try the games. Then, slowly enable performance options in the BIOS including memory timing, etc. You might also want to experiment with the AGP settings. Do you get hard locks or crashes within windows? If so, memory might be borked. Try conservative settings.

:edit: Are you running Catalyst 3.7 yet?

Post your system specs as well, including type of motherboard.

Rage3d.com
Biggest source for ATI around :)
There you can find both help (they have huge boards), tweakers and drivers. On the board is a post on a good uninstallation/installation procedure, step by step (radeon driver board, its a sticky).

here's what I'm doing when my new card and memory arrives.

1. create boot disk.
2. back up files.
3. turn off computer, insert new card and memory.
4. use boot up disk to boot.
5. format c:
6. install windows.
7. install everything else.

:)

i have directx9 installed already, so when my 9800 arrives i'll just plug it in and away i go :) assuming my power supply can handle it

hmm, yes, i would look into good cooling, but i tink you'll find this is a driver issue. When you installed dx9, it overwrote some files used by your current driver set, just install the latest display drivers now that you have installed dx9 and it should be fine.
If that doesn't work, just uninstall your display drivers and install cleanly.
