State of MMOs

There's also Gods & Heroes but that's just another WoW clone with greek mythology as a backdrop.

I'm sorry to dampen your parade PotBS fans (I once was one), but I beta'd it and it sucked. Yes, yes, beta means nothing about the final game condition; but at the state it was in when I played it, it was complete trash and was, in no way, redeemable. I had such high hopes for PotBS, but I was totally let down by the beta.

AoC is looking like my anti drug, so I'm waiting for that now.

Well I've heard from other people who have played the other stages of beta and they thought it had great promise. So nyah.

Besides, Player VS Player interaction and political dynamics are going to be a large part of the game. Something you wouldn't have seen trying to fight npcs.

Personally, I dont like the formula to most MMO's use when it comes to turn based, stat stacking combat, but twitch based MMOs like Planetside, and the auto destruction of Auto Assault have intruigued me.

Huxley looks interesting, so I'm keeping tabs on it.

Stargate is one that I will be looking forward to in the coming years. However, for now, I've got WoW to keep me occupied until Warhammer.

I know a lot of people think that WAR is just a WoW clone, but the differences between the two games are enough to make me want to play Warmhammer.

Edit: For the people who are too lazy to click the link...

Damn, you got me. You completely destroyed my entire post.

it has a card trading (pokemon?) system with the minions ..well sort of. ..not quite but something similiar where you pick a set of minions (npcs - mythological beings) with a combination of abilities (healer, tank etc) to bring with you to combat ..so you could have a raid sized party with only a few real players ..oh and some of the fatalities look pretty brutal :)

Holy shit @ Stargate Worlds, that's just some beautiful level design right there. I'll have to keep my eyes open for previews.

Yeah. There's more on their website. The concept art is pretty interesting too.

Lool. My typos :p Oh well, that's what I get for trying to type while i'm laying on my side and reaching over some pillows to type... ;P

I believe that Warhammer online will be great. I've a few friends in the beta, and while they can't tell me specifics due to the NDA, it's apparently a lot of fun. Also the RVR is supposed to kick ass.

Even though i am not fan, nor do i understand the attraction of it.
WoW has yet to find a worthy opponent and competitor.
Newly released mmo's such as LOTORO,DDO,Vanguard etc promised to deliver new and innovative features that even WoW fans could not resist. In the end most of these games were either over hyped and rushed to the public with game breaking bugs that turned off most of their player bases.I am aware of WAR and it's fan base, lore and history but none these things will matter if the game ends up delivering short.
It will probably end up as a WoW clone,or maybe not.
It could end up being a strong competitor and maybe even a succesor to WoW.
I myself am not really a fan of such "Fantasy" based mmo's and games in general.
I Am more of a Sci-Fi fan to be honest and prefer a bit more adult oriented games and content.
Age of Conan on the other hand looks like a lot of fun and very adult themed.
It'll be rated M as far as i know.
It looks a bit more realistic then most mmo's.Not to mention very gritty and dark as well.
I used to play SWG a lot,if not too much. The Sony pricks decided to **** the game up and now my options are even more limited. For now,i have CoH/CoV which was always my secret mistress when i played SWG.It'll keep me busy until these future projects start revealing themselves a bit more.

Huxely...i don't know.
As long as they don't make the same mistakes as the Planetside team did, and create a more social and community oriented game....i am sold!

Planetside was going to be awesome. It's a goddamned shame. I don't know who to blame for that one, really, but it all went downhill when SmokeJumper became the project manager. It all went to shit.

Used to talk to the PlanetSide team on a daily basis. Was good friends with them; they were good friends to the [Darkside] clan. They used to even say I looked like the lovechild of two of the devs, haha. Back then when they used to talk to us, a lot of good ideas got passed around. Lots of cool stuff planned. But then SmokeJumper joined the team as lead. Then the graphics changed. Then they started cutting shit out. And by that time I started saying, "Time to jump ship. This isn't going to turn out well." :(

Some of my guys stuck with it for awhile but...it was eh, in the end. Which really sucks. The game SHOULD have been awesome, and had a lot more community stuff than it did. Alas.

But Huxley...so far so good. I don't know how social it'll be though. But it looks like it'll be pretty pimp.

You gotta admit if you got a good team-game going, Planetside is hellu fun.

But Huxley does look pretty awesome...

What I'm looking forwards is into Guild Wars 2. The first Guild Wars was ok, I was a bit turned down by the instanced world, but it was pretty cool having important npc's help you in some missions.

They've said Guild Wars 2 is going to have a persistent world + it will still be free to play per month:)

Given the money being generated by Blizzard with WoW, and the amount of people it allows them to keep on enriching the project, it really doesn't make much sense if you're a developer to remotely try and compete with them in the high fantasy genre with a MMO product, without coming off as a poor second cousin (AoC is clearly aiming for a different audience so it should do well)

If I were a developer now I'd say the areas to consider looking at would be a wide ranging survivalist post-apoc world (fallout style), or a large space opera style game akin to something like mass effect (ships and guns), but without the restrictions of a license like Star Wars or Star trek bogging the thing down in terms of opportunities and creativity.

I'd also say that the audience is there for a more demanding MMORPG experience. One that very much centres your character where he/she is in the gameworld/universe rather than making travel between locations easy and therefore meaningless. Envisage that your character signs up as a crew member for a space flight to a distant planet for exploration/conquest/mining and in doing so you open up a wide range of opportunities for your character to develop and progress, both on the ship and on the planet (if you are prepared to take them), but in real world terms the trip takes you away from your home base for 2 weeks. Almost like an extended instance with you and the other PC passengers, locked into it.

I just couldn't get into Guild Wars after playing WoW for years. It felt so basic and tiny with not much to do.

Like alot of you guys i'm waiting for the first really great mmofps. The first developer to pull this off is going to be stinking rich. Untill then i'm hoping Warhammer provides a more frantic, action packed experience than WoW offers. Farming for primals/rep/raid mats really is ****ing tedious, as are the raids. Why did I play WoW again?

Oh, you are so delusional.

(Geddit? Geddit? Oh, nevermind.)

The game SHOULD have been awesome
It was for about 2 weeks. I think the bad thing really, was how huge the game was that capping and holding caps seemed pretty meaningless cause at 4am you have noone to stop you from capping damn near everything. When did you stop playing? I never got to play the expansion but I figure it made it just as worse with caves now. Was smokejumper on the team at that point?

Well that's the problem, having a comparison always causes expectations to run too high. I played WoW after GW, and frankly, I hated it because not only was it was too crowded, but crowded with complete and utter wankers. And it looked like Disney. I'm sure if I had played them the other way around I would be agreeing with your point of view.

But I like the PvE side of MMO's more than PvP. If you haven't played WoW, and if you stop looking at Guild Wars as a WoW rival and more as a massive single player Diablo-alike with a bit of multiplayer dungeoning thrown in, you will love it.

The 2 addons are a bit naff with too much storytelling that appears in too many annoying pop-ups, but the new Eye of the North is a great expansion to the original game and plays just like it. I can't stress enough the fact that this is a highly polished and optimised, bug free, addictive, fun, stunning piece of entertainment that costs nothing to play and is the best value for money in a game that I've ever seen. 2 Years and I still go back to it.

Roll on Guild Wars 2 \o/
