Steady camera when walking

yeah but our eyes automatically move when you're looking at something, unless you're really running.
Try moving your head up and down and focusing on something, your view almost stays the same the whole time.

I think that head-bobbing and weapon-bobbing should be incorporated into all first-person-shooters. Although there should be an option to turn them off for those who can't stand it.

Like others have stated, bobbing adds realism and immersion into the game.

And She also makes a great point of, without bobbing, it feels like you are sliding along the ground.

meh thats what weapon bobbing is for, I dont need to see the whole world move up and down when I walk.

Raven shield had the best bobbing EVER, imo. Totally felt like real walking.

WORD! I loved the walking and especially the sound of the footstep.. It was so awesome.

When the Valve guys introduce any feature, they make sure it has a good impact on gameplay. I remember Rick answering some fan who liked a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. feature, and he said he didn't think it would have been useful for gameplay. Gabe said something similar about clothes and boobies when answering other questions.

Turning on and off this bobbing option could be interesting, but I don't see it as easy as it seems. I think they would have to remove the "elevator" effect on ladders as well, and so on.

It should be easy to have as an option. Thief III had it on as a default, but it only took a couple days for some fan to modify it and take it out.

Valve's best bet it so do it like Unreal 2 (bad game ;). In U2, you could have bobbing from 0 (none) through 1.0 (bob like crazy). I usually put it on 0.3 since there it's subtle, but still effective (ie: no gliding).

I don't understand actual camera bob. Weapons are ok, but when I walk in real life, my head isn't bouncing all over the place. Some games make it look like the character is suffering from an inner ear imbalance. Our brain tries to keep things as smooth as possible.

When I run though, I do get a slight up and down bob...and it's very slight.

The camera does "bob", when climbing the stairs. Noticed it in the apartment's video.

when I walk, my head doesnt bob, at all. If you bob your head while walking running etc. you have got one hell of a wierd way of walking. Therefore I prefer a steady camera, because bobing feels artificial and detracts from the game. Besides that it just wouldnt be halflife.

I don't like camera bob. It doesn't make it more realistic to me. When I'm walking down the street I don't ever consciously notice my head bobbing so why want it in a game?

I perfer no bobbing.
When I walk I only bob slightly but I only notice that I bob when I look for it.
Normally my brain stabilizes what my eyes see.

Bobbing in game is moving the camera (or game visuals) and not me personally therefore it is lack of control and distracting to me.
I can imagine myself walking much easier when there is no bob.

Am I the only one that notices view bobing when walking in RealLife(tm)? It's not the head that bobs, it's the movement of the whole body that causes the effect.
I can understand no view bobing when the player is walking slowly, but when you run, the bobing should be noticable.
Exactly. Your whole body moves up and down just a little. The camera being steady gives me the feel of sneaking around or something, and it's like you're gliding across the floor. And when you have no weapon like in the train station bink, it just looks weird. Just a tiny bit of bobbing helps. Not a lot, nothing that would make you motion sick. If you can't handle the camera moving a tiny bit, you have a weak stomach. But I agree, there should be an option to turn it off.

I hate camera bobbing. I find it very annoying and if it is in the game I hope it is an option.

I just tried it, i walked around my house, and didn't notice any bobbing (well a little, but i had to focus to see it) so unless you guys are all drunk or something....

anyways, they should just do it like HL1

Hahaha . . . do you realize that it DOES bob in CS? Just goes to show that it can be done in a way that is very subtle, but still gives a good effect. That's all I want, a subtle bob.

Yeah, I just want a little bob. And try RUNNING around your house, because in games you're always running. You'll bob more. Oh yeah, and in HL1, the camera bobs. So, apparently you're fine with bobbing.
