Does anyone know if there will be aspects of stealth in the gameplay? Will I be able to sneak up behind a combine soldier and knock him unconscious with my crowbar? Or camp a dark alleyway and have the patrol walk past, and then pounce on them? It would be great if you could hide in shadows.

On a side note, I wanted to call this thread 'Crouching Gordon, Hidden Tiger' but wisely chickened out.

PC gamer talked about 2 approaches, that included sneaking up on combine with the crowbar, im sure you will be able to hide from stuff to escape, although half-lifes never been a stealth game, so dont expect a shad-o-meter or anything. :)

The way gordan swings that Crowbar, I doubt it very much :p

I'm guessing the technologys there in the engine if you so wanted to but I doubt it'll be in Hl2. The combine look like they wear nightvision masks anyways so that just leaves the Xen and other aliens to hide from.

I'd assume the "stealth" aspects would be more akin to Halo (where if you were quiet you could sneak up on the covenent and hit them on the back of the head) than Splinter Cell or Thief.

Crouching Gordon, Hidden G-Man?

Haha.

If someone made a mod (and i know there is one in the making) that used stealth shaders, then you could blend in with your environment and knock the combine unconscious. But that would need coding to prevent them from seeing you.

Silly Gordon, Stealth is for Sam!

I think that is probably just the Combine with blue eyes. On second thought that could be just a visible sign that a Combine has nightvision turned on...

HL1 had a sort of stealth feature. For the few that played the training course, it states that when you crouch your suits "stealth mode" is active, making you hard to notice. Other than making less noise, im pretty sure it doesnt do anything else. But you could sneak up inches behind a grunt, stand up, and blow his head off with a Magnum. :naughty:

Yea, I doubt there'll an "instant kill from behind" kinda thing, but I presume you should be able to hide while they pass.

I just hope to that they don't add lame specific stealth parts in the game - they piss me off so much.

Hopefully their will be some cool stealth aspects, just nothing along the lines of Far Cry with ENDLESS crawling through the bushes

I believe they said that most situations can be done in multiple different ways, including stealth.

i heard doom3 will have some kind of stealth, like if your in dark shadows demons cant see you so they wont attack. and demons can also hide behind things.

your also supposed to have a flashlight in D3 so im expecting some creepy moments when things just go pitch black and all you have is a flashlight which you cant hold with another weapon.

so i wouldnt be surprized if you could hide in hl2. :)

Well, since Half-Life 2 has such good AI, you should be able to hide behind things and not be seen...

It'd be cool in the middle of a huge fight with lots of combine. Jump over a fence and into a dumpster and watch them all run by, not knowing where you went... :)

I think in a preview they said that demons will 'smell you' in the dark so you can't hide from them.. I'm not sure if that's just a specific baddie though.

I don't think HL2 will go out of it's way to do stealth (no visibility and noise displays, etc) but AI seems good (they hear and see), using your hands on objects means you could throw something to distract guards, walking on different materials will create different sounds... simple stuff like that that are in the game and can be used for stealth if you wanted.

Sneaking up on folks was how I beat the first three HLs. So long as they don't see you, and you stay crouched, you're invisible.

I guess you'd be able to use stealth.
Most games have used some form of it since the release of MGS.

There will always be that element to appeal to the little pussies scared to get into big fights :) They're those same people who crouch move all over the place in CS.

i think you could sneak up the combine soldiers, and f.e. throw a grens in their bunker...and maybe you could use your crowbar trick, but i dont know if one swing would be enough to kill/KO a combine... or how about just avoiding a post of combines?

That's certainly what I expect :D

Example of stealth in HL = Blast Pit (When you are against the tentacle)

There was also one point in HalfLife-Uplink where I crept up to a demo detonator. The two soldiers went up to a door to check the demo-pack. I detonated the pack and they Gibbed.

For those who remember, it was just outside the radar dome
