Meep meep, that aside i've got a little question to ask you guys.

Really soon i'm going to be buying the silver pack off steam, my question is: Can I use a retail copy (my friends dvd/5cd version) to install the game and then activate/use it with my account, because I dont have the time/bandwidth to be downloading hl2 from my awesomely fast 56k connection :|

So how exactly do the online packages work?
Do you get a cd key or access to download the files, or can I just install it and log in with my account after buying the pack etc.

thanks in advance

Im pretty sure that this would work. First enter your Silver CD Key, then install HL2. It should detect the installation and everything should be fine

do not install the retail package if you plan to get the silver deal. It will only let you have one halflife2 package

Ugh, damnit. Seems i'm going to have to download it, looks like im going to have to whore around my computer, downloading at those lucky broadband users houses

I can, I just dont want to. Collectors edition comes with merchandise I don't really want, and the 5 cd version doesn't come with enough 'stuff' (I want dod:s plus the other stuff), so buying the silver pack off steam seemed logical :p

Why do you want the extra content which is really only for online play (or LAN)? You want DOD:S, but your not going to have fun playing it on 56k.

In reference to your original post though, no you cannot order it from Steam and install from CD.

When you install from CD your asked for your CD-Key, which is then regestered into your Steam account forever. When you buy the game via Steam you are never given a CD-Key, as your profile and proof of purchase is already there.

You bought HL2... on Steam... FULLY knowing you'd have to download it?

Dude, you can't just download it at a friend's and bring it home...

Now you're out the 60 bucks it cost you, and you HAVE to download it through Steam on YOUR PC... Less you bring your rig to a friend's place... Actually that's a fairly good idea...

Read. Thanks for the info, and I want the silver edition becaue I attend alot of lans, most having broadband connections. Plus soon enough i'll be able to pay for adsl... hopefully, anywho, thanks again.

hl source is definately not worth any dough... me sniffs, because I bought collectors edition... :(

Having no credit card is a rather big problem, im using my mums credit card to order off steam this time, but im pretty sure its going to be a one off thing, she's a little 'iffy' about online stuff with credit cards, but no amount of convincing will change her mind. Plus having the option of backordering through steam is nifty, access to like... everything half life based ever is groovy :afro:

Although I still have my Half Life 1 platinum box set around here somewhere. Meh, all in all, it seems pretty well much worth the 76 (aud) im paying... although downloading it all is going to be a pain. :dozey:
