I suspect you're thinking of "Disk Operating System" rather then "Denial Of Service".
DOS attacks send **large** amounts of information requests at a target. So many that the target's CPU/bandwidth is used up and stops responding to all requests including legitimate requests. DOS attacks are usually DDOS attacks - that is, Distributed DOS--which means that many different computers are used to attack the target. This is often done with "hacked" (compromised) computers - the owners of which don't have any idea that they're part of a DDOS attack.
