Another new update to the Steam platform has been released:
A platform update is available and will be applied automatically when Steam is restarted. The changes include:<ul >[*]Added backup game files feature (right click on game)[*]Added purchase support for American Express, Discover and JCB credit cards[/list]
As per usual, restart your Steam clients to receive the update.[br]

For everyone's information, there is a quick way to bring up the Steam's backup utility and that is by typing steam://backup into your browser or clicking the link.

nifty,
shame i dont have anything yet that needs backing up, hard resisting not buying over steam with everyone able to play around on CS:S and with mapping.

why are you resisting?

there's like...one benefit to buying retail.

and it isn't much of a benefit if you have a decent ink jet printer to make a case with...

i successfully used a visa electron card to order my silver version. so add that to the list of accepted cards :) i got charged an extra £1.50 one-off charge for using a debit card, but worth it.

Just my luck. Literally the day after I manually back up my .gcf files onto 2 DVD+Rs, Steam comes out with an official backup utility.

memory errors own me :<

Sorry to say, if you are still having memory errors HL2 will have memory errors as well... FIX THEM ASAP....

I had them in CSS when 95% of the server was loading. I couldnt even stress test. same errors.

I updated everything from my BIOS to my FIRMWARE, to my MAINBOARD and not one crash since (3 days and 10 hours+ of gameplay)

Besides this, is there a RESTORE feature??!??

If you have memory errors on the stick of ram, you need new ones.

ITS NOT THE RAM !!

I had those memory errors as well and I did all the updates to my PC that weren't software (BIOS etc) and it fixed it.

The backup util creates self extracting .exe files

3 updates in a week? Valve finnally see steam is buggy lacks proper credit card support and will probably leave consumers clueless when they buy HL2.

Whats wrong with numerous updates? I guess you are the only one complaining. If its so buggy and lack proper credit card support than why are all the major cards on it now? If you can't order something off steam, I am willing to bet you don't know how to order anything off the internet, its pretty brainless work ordering off steam.

good to see Valve are listening to the community with the backup utility..

only a week till we get our hand on the gaming holy grail! =]

good i guess, but completely pointless feature for anyone computer literate.... i can probably compress those files a lot better than steam, and how hard is it to manually put them in the steamapps folder?...
credit card support is always nice tough

I'd still like the backup util to have the option to download platform.gcf (the steam platform), and your subfolder in steamapps (the one holding configs etc..).

Last time I checked, my platform.gcf was around 14mb, and I'm on 56k. If I use the steam backup util, I'll still need to download that, which is a good couple of hours, then setup my configs in each game again.

It's not a bad feature, but as VaPorZ said, I can do a better backup myself.

Just wondering if now would be a good time to back up HL2? What do you figure? Will there be any more phases to the preload?

Personally, I'm going to wait until it's been released - there's likely to be a small steam update before it's unlocked, and judging by the amount of recent activity, we'll see some more steam updates before the 16th, and maybe some bugfixes shortly after.

There's never going to be a perfect time to backup, because steam allows the game to be updated regularly (and there's apparently a big CSS update next month), so it's really up to you.

I'll wait until it's released though :)

You think fo0bar has it bad? I just finished writing my own backup program >:|

Better compression than steam tho!

Yes! Excelent news, hope this will work for me too. Now I don´t need to rely on my parents credit cards to purchase Half-Life 2.

It's been working since the preorder-thing was started. :)

I made a backup now because, knowing my luck, steam will corrupt itself at 11:30PM on the 15th. A $0.75 DVD is worth beating Murphy's Law.

I'll probably make a backup after the gcf files are decrypted as well.

does this backup include the steam program or is it only the game files...if so i may still use the other guys from a little while back that included the steam program. or add it myself.

... ahh, but the DVD would also fall under the realm of Murphy's Law. You'll probably break it or scratch it during the frustration following the GCF corruption... or it could have been corrupted before you backed it up and Steam just didn't recognize the corruption for some reason.
