An update to the Steam Client was released not too long ago. One of the more significant changes was the update to the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
  • Steam Client
  • Steam Subscriber Agreement updated
  • Added game manual support for 3rd party games
  • The serverbrowser filter lists only games you own
  • Fixed crash when launching Steam from inside of a 16-bit app (i.e. the installer)
  • Added steam://connect/ syntax, e.g. steam://connect/10.1.1.1:27015
Yep, you guessed it. Restart Steam to receive the update.

yeah that is to bad isnt it

trust me of anyone i know of hard and how long it takes to make games
but damn dont say some things coming and then give some weak updates ..

huh or is that just me

It's just you.
 
It'd be nice if they atleast told you what section was changed in the agreement.

I'd rather have a few bug fixes every week or so instead of a massive fix every couple of months. Keeps everything smoother methinks.

well they have to say that..the same way you should release a disclaimer with a level/map/mod for a game. we all know that a level can't break someone's computer..but its just there for safety reasons so that they can't sue the creator when their machine doesn't work anymore.
 
why dont they update the SDK ? it crashes every time I try to make something, it like watches me build cool levels and just before i want to save, hell breaks lose and all these fatal errors really F up my computer...

The extra, free content is still coming. This was just a Steam update.
 
I feel sad for the day when fixing a crash bug isn't a good thing.

Also, steam://connect/ has been a long time coming - most people have had to fudge it up until now.
 
Who or how many reads trough these "copyright statments" when u install a new program. ?

In the bottom line all these companies are doing is ****ing with the end user.

But the user does take this crap but up to a limit.

It looks like it's been rewritten to me. I've had a glance at it before and I don't remember it looking like that.

I don't remember these being in it either...

B. Beta Software Terms

Valve may from time to time make software accessible to you via Steam prior to the general commercial release of such software ("Beta Software"). Valve will identify such Beta Software as "beta" or "pre-release" software. You are not required to use Beta Software, but if Valve offers it, you may elect to use it under the following terms. Beta Software will be deemed to be Steam Software, and each item of Beta Software provided will be deemed a Subscription for such software, with the following provisions specific to Beta Software:
(i) your right to use the Beta Software license is effective until the earlier of: (a) Valve ceasing to make the Beta Software accessible to you; (b) a final release of the software that corresponds to the Beta Software; or (c) termination by Valve pursuant to Section 13 below;
(ii) certain Beta Software may be made available to you subject to additional Subscription Terms to which you must agree as a condition of use of the Beta Software;
(iii) Valve may request or require that you provide suggestions, feedback, or data regarding your use of the Beta Software, which will be deemed User Generated Information under Section 7 below; and
(iv) in addition to the waivers and limitations of liability for all Steam Software under Section 9 below, you specifically acknowledge that Beta Software is not final and may create incompatibilities or damage to your computer, data, and/or software. If you decide to install and/or use Beta Software, it is entirely as your risk.

C. Source SDK.

Your Subscription(s) may contain access to the Valve software development kit (the "SDK") for the computer game engine used in Half-Life 2 and other compatible Valve products (the "Source Engine"). You may use, reproduce and modify the SDK solely to develop a modified game (a "Mod") for Half-Life 2 or other Valve products compatible with and using the Source Engine. You may reproduce, distribute and license the Mod in object code form, solely to licensed end users of Half-Life 2 or other compatible Valve products, without charge.

Yes, it's all been there, I've compared it to the old subscriber agreement (use archive.org to find it) and most of the changes are minor ones.

****ing excuse you. It seems you've become so accustomed to Valve giving you FREE NEW CONTENT for their games that they have NO OBLIGATION WHATSOEVER TO DO, that you've come to expect it on a regular basis. Appreciate what you get and that it's quality, don't whine about them not giving it to you often enough. Ever tried to make a map of CS:S or DOD:S quality? Yeah, it's somewhat of a lengthy process.
 
What exactly does the //Connect: thingy do? If you put in a server IP does it boot up the game it's tied to or something?

Well obviously VALVe is sick of the little children threatening to this and that, and they OBVIOUSLY forgot they entered and agreement when installing Steam on thier pc. I can't believe some users after time don't read agreements about the game they own, and what they can and cannot do with it.
 
At the end of the day you are always gonna get people who dont think Valve are doing enough and the polar opposite... who think anybody that bad names valve are scum.

Personaly i just sit back and laugh at the many.... many.... delays and lack luster updates... but thats just me... im not flaming people over the net becuase they disagree.

I was mostly prompted to type this after reading Ennui's post.

thing that sucks about that is for people like me with the 56k's. every time i have time to play a steam game, like when iwanted to try lost coast, it starts to download, takes a long time to get it all, then when its's done ive lost my window of oppourtunity to play. Ive not actually played anything hl2 in about 2 months even though uive tried about 8 times. every time i start it, its updating. and don't tell me to go into offline mode, you can't play anything in offline mode unless you go into it when your online, and only after its updated. its convoluted as an be.

it will get better though, the last big steam change was nicer, not great though. but now ea and vapour is doing online distribution, steam will have more competition to make their product better. competition tends to do that.

now, about the update. I agreed to the update when installing all my steam aps already. how an they change the agreement after i already agreed to it? this is new, since steam allows changes, even to the eula, which i don't think has ever happened before in the history of software (since most all software you buy install, its all on the cd and never changes) i dunno what to think about this.

yes changing the eula after you already agreed to it is yet another milestone
 
Yay now I get to add a manual to the mods I'm working on.

It would truely help anyone who reads it.

I can see this being great for mods like dystopia which have some initial complexity to them.

Another great update for the mods. First custom icons and developer websites now manuals!

The steam://connect/PutServerIpHere Allows you to hyperlink a steam server so that you now have an easy way to connect to server using an external program. As you can see this is a hyperlink so that game server websites can have an easy connect right on thier webpage, and other programs don't have to worry about a long steam launch syntax for runing.

Today I wanted to play half life 2 lost coast and then I had to click on "terms" button and I cameacross this:

"Valve hereby grants, and you accept, a limited, terminable, non-exclusive license and right to use the Steam Software for your personal use in accordance with this Agreement and the Subscription Terms. The Steam Software is licensed, not sold."

So one day I cannot play it any more... ?
 
what i have been playing till they fixed steam

here is what i was plying until the updated repaired my copy of steam http://www.entertainmentanytime.com yup it kept me busy i guess. press space to hit the guy agaisnt the glass it is pretty funny or you can make him disco dance or other things, press b to bump him... you get the idea.
