Gabe Newell gave a presentation at the Showdown LAN event the other day (thanks Greg), which seems to have focused on the Steam Community. Fortunately for us someone had a camera, but don't get too excited: there's nothing particularly remarkable yet. There are surprises, like global voice support handled by Steam itself and support for external games, but otherwise it's what you might expect from a post-Xbox Live community system.

Gabe's release estimate is July, before the launch of Team Fortress 2 and the Orange Box.

Whats with all the question marks?
In before lock.

news to me!
those pics are really hard to make out though

There was just an update on Steam saying it would be the end of July.

That sucks. It better come out before next Saturday because I'm on holiday then. :(

Update delayed to Tuesday. Possibly Wednesday.

Probably see it Tuesday or Wednesday, if not next week sometime...

Bump. Steam Community should be coming out today. :naughty:

Wow I can't believe they will miss the deadline. They had an entire month, then said they were polishing it up. Even then they didn't deliver. Way to go Valve. :dozey:

:( Oh well, im betting it will come tmr.

You guys do realize it will be beta...

Beta or not its still something new from Valve and anything new from Valve = win.

Oh yeah. Definitely.

I just wouldn't get disappointed by treating it as a game with a release date if it doesn't come out tonight (still July in Valve's timezone). They said in this steam update "more details on the way". Since they said that they probably would make a news announcement with 'more details' before it actually gets launched.

And before you ladies start complaining about things are broken on it, IT'S A BETA. We were never going to get an "official" release from VALVe with it, they said beta in the beginning so you'd have to go find the command anyways. Build is from yesterday tho, so they lived up to their promises ;)

holy shit you can add non steam games to steam D:

edit: my steam just crashed and it started to update again...its gone D:

I think i'll wait till it's safe with this feature.

That's what I'm doing. I'll just watch pictures but won't install until Valve says it's safe for us to update. :)

I'll wait till it's official, so nothing breaks. But as of right now...

"HOLY SHIT AWESOME!"

I'll be adding BF2 to Steam it looks like.

Even if something breaks you could just reinstall steam and keep your gcf files. Wouldn't really be to hard to fix.

Nothing broke when I did it, but there is nothing to see though, so far they added a tab and re did the friends panel.

It would be nice if when you add a game to Steam, you don't need to use the CD any more. ;( Really, there's no point in adding to Steam, unless you have to "reinstall" the game, and it adds the files needed to the GCF, but I don't think it will.

I want Steam to develop into it's own gaming OS :D
