Portal 2 for PlayStation®3: Steam Details Revealed

Valve's Highly-Anticipated Title Prepares for Launch On PS3

April 13, 2011 - Valve, creator of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today disclosed details regarding the Steam experience designed for the PlayStation®3, which is set to debut next week with the release of Portal 2.

The first title to support Steam on a console, Portal 2 offers cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, and achievements, all powered by Steam. Steam on the PS3 also saves co-op game progress and single player saved games to the Steam Cloud, enabling players to pick up where they left off on any PlayStation®3.

The Steam overlay for PS3 provides access to both PSN and Steam friends, displaying their in-game or online status and providing a quick pathway to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites. Steam Achievements are earned in lockstep with PSN Trophies and are also accessible within the Steam overlay.

Steam on the PS3 provides access to all of these features once the player has linked their PlayStation® Network account with a Steam account, which is done right within the game. A Steam user can login to an existing account, and anyone new to Steam can create an account with the click of a button.

In the spirit of Steam Play, linked players of the PS3 version of Portal 2 can also access and play their copy of Portal 2 on any PC or Mac by redeeming an in-box access code on their computer. The Steam client verifies the linked customer and then lists Portal 2 among their library of Steam games for PC and Mac.

"Can two players play online co-op with each other using a single purchase of Portal 2 for PlayStation®3?

Only PlayStation®3 split-screen co-op can be played using a single copy of the game. When you purchase a new copy of Portal 2 for PlayStation®3, you will receive an in-box code which provides your linked Steam account with access to your copy of Portal 2 on your computer. The game is still owned by only a single Steam account--another copy will be required to play online co-op with a friend."

What? NOOOOOO. The one reason I pre-ordered the PS3 version of the game was so that I could Laptop it up while a friend full-screened on the PS3 over LAN ( I hate gamepads for FPS games, they just suck). This is terrible news.
What am I going to do now? I'll either have to tie my PSN account to a NEW Steam account (which is silly), at which point I'd have to buy it again on the PC for my current account, or... I don't know.

HELP ME GABE, I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO LAN WITH MY FRIENDS.

LAN is dead. Blizzard killed it. I'm sorry Dek.

I find gaming on the 360 or PC much easier and smoother than on the PS3. Especially when it comes to voice communications. Either one person has a shitty Bluetooth, or its too quiet, or no one is talking at all. but I still think its cool it has cross platform support

Strange. According to this interview if you don't link your PS3 copy to a game you should still be able to play co-op over PSN.

Edit: Actually reading over it I think the only point PS3-to-PS3 co-op is mentioned is by the interviewer, not the Valve guy. Could be he didn't catch the mistake and just agreed to it. Bollocks.

I just read this on SPUF:
Zero2Dash said:
You need 1 Ps3 copy.
2 PSN accounts and 2 Steam accounts (both free).

Start game, use your PSN account, tie into your Steam account. Redeem code on PC with your Steam account. You play on PC, copy of game is dumped into your Steam account.

Sign out of your account on Ps3 and have him sign into his PSN account. Load game. Tie his PSN account to his Steam account. He plays on Ps3. He gets no free copy in his Steam account because the code was already used (by you).

You play in Steam on PC under your username, they play on the Ps3 under their username. Got it?
So I guess that's what I'm going to have to do.

Why exactly should you take zero2dash's word for it? He's some random SPUF user with 7 posts who has not played Portal 2 yet and is directly contradicting what Valve have said regarding how you redeem the codes. I am pretty amazed that people are surprised that you need two copies of the game to play co-op online.

Well it makes sense. I wouldn't have thought the PS3 version would have its own CD key, and so you could tie one copy to multiple accounts (since it's just tying a PSN ID to a steam account).

I had to register just to point this out. you can indeed play Co-op with your friend with 1 copy of the ps3 version. as valve has noted you can only register your pc version to one steam account, however you can play the ps3 version on as many different accounts as you want. once you have registered your pc copy to your steam account all you have to do is go on to your playstation, make a new user and a new psn account, when you log in to steam through that account it will create a new steam account with the same name, add yourself as a friend, send invite, and that's all you have to do. unfortunately as you ps3 owners may know by now the psn has been down for 4 days and sony has not given us an eta yet.
