Steam does not work at all

I downloaded and installed Steam. When I click the icon, it comes up and says updating. Nothing happens and about 5 mins later it says could not connect to network. My laptop has fine system specs an I am connected on the LAN at my college. On the steam site it said the college could be blocking some of the ports on my connection. Could this be the problem? I do not think I can register without steam!

long story short: no hl2 4 u.

ur college firewall does block many of the internet ports. so steam wont be able to connect to the authentication server.
ull have to take ur pc to an internet connection that dont block steam ports, OR contact ur system adinistrator to see if he wants to unlock the needed ports for u.

the portnumbers should be availible in the steam faq

Thanks for the info. I was afraid of this. Do you kow how much this sucks that I can not play HL2.

There are ways to get around it dude. Either using HTTP-Tunnel or by getting a free AOL trial if you have access to a phone line.

Could someone please give a step by step guide to using a http tunnel for Steam please? I went to the IT guys at my Uni but no one had a clue what to do, i asked if they could open ports, but 1 guy said no, and the other guy had no idea how to go about doing that.
