Steam downloads capped...good sign?

Hey I just noticed that they capped the download speed to 300-400 kps. I remember it used to be upwards to around 2.2 mps. Maybe this is a good sign that they are going to release Half-life 2 soon?

It's not capped. Go and check again.

EDIT: I'm stupid. Thought it was the total bandwidth.

*whips out shotgun*
if this ISNT half life 2, then this board is gonna be remodled in2 a slaughter house
GIVE ME HALF LIFE 2 NOW!!! :sniper:

Maybe the steam downloads aren't capped, your net connection is. Notice also that the scale on the monitor changes dynamically: the upper limit isn't a "cap" just the top end of the scale.

heh...I used to get 700K off that thing...haven't tried recently.

*lock n' load*
IMA KEEP MY PROMISE, I SWEAR IT ON THIS VERY DAY!!
(aww... I was really hoping it waz half life 2)

You'd need to order Half-life 2 before it would be downloaded from Steam. I think the game would appear in the menu first.

Not necessarily. Remember Condition Zero? It was preloaded on everyone's comp.

That is about as fast as I have been getting it lately, and my connection can do much more than that. I could have just been on during a peak time though. I dont think it is a sign of HL2, only a sign of the steam user base getting larger thus needing to split up bandwidth for people sucking the life out of it with fast connections.

I read that Valve will ask you if you want to Pre-load it, I'm not sure, could some one confirm ?

but they still had it in the menu as Coming Soon. It wasnt jsut mysterious. PLus they turned off that feature because lots of poeple got mad. I actually think it wasnt intentional, but I dont know. It didnt do that with Codename Gordon.

A lot of people got pissed when CZ auto preloaded. You had to ask for Codename Gordon instead of an auto download, so I dont think theyre going to force preloads on people, especially for something as large as HL2. Some people might not have enough disk space.

What would be the point of capping the speed limit anyway? To make people wait longer? I doubt it. You just happened to be on a slower content server or the routes were bad or or .. etc

Could someone, please tell us for once and all, will HL2 preload yes or no?
I think it will not...

an email from gabe said that it would ask you whether you wanted HL2 preloaded onto your comp, everyone who says no has headcrabs released into their homes.

Maybe so people get a fair share of the bandwidth and no one is downloading a 3megabit a second and someone else is at 2kb/s.

Yes, but the thing you suggest would be sensible only if the content servers were full.

You must have just installed/updated steam then.

If they won't force you to buy the game before pre-loading it, Then I guess I will either download or download it & then delete just for fun ;) Gotta keep the connection running you see :D

I didn't mean they wouldn't ask first. I just meant that you will probably have the ability to preload it even if you're not buying it.

I wonder if preloading HL2 and then going out to a store, buying HL2, and then using the retail CD to unlock the preloaded HL2 will work? Installing HL2 could take quite a while since the game is going to be very large, especially on older PCs.

That's actually the last question asked in the Valve info thread. According to one of the reps, you'll be able to buy it at the store and then unlock a preloaded version with the key.

I don't remember Condition Zero actually! And it wasn't preloaded on to my computer. There is no chance Valve will upload the game on to people's machines without them knowing. The least they would do is put the game on the menu (even greyed out) just so people know its 'available'.

I was just downloading at about 1.9Mbps at my friend's house...Comcast...

We still need Blue Shift on STEAM before we see Half-Life 2 on there methinks.
