After installing the game, I try to register it in Steam but it just comes up stating "Installation of Half Life 2 Standard Retail Required" and asking me to insert my DVD and Install, what the heck is going on?

Bump!

I have the exact same problem. I wonder if im missing a registry key pointing to hl2 files or something. Please help.

Did it try to register itself, or did you try initiating it?

It should run Steam immediatly after installation (so ensure you're connected to the net if you're on dialup), but if that doesn't happen and it's not recognising your CD key when you click "Register a game I already own"... ack. Can't think of anything to fix that...

This is what it does:

First i install the game from the dvd, then the steam client comes up and asks for my cdkey. I give the key but then it says: The game must be installed first. But the thing is that it is installed.

Now if i go to steam manually and try to register a product i allready own, it says the same thing.

This steam crap is just rediculous, this is the first game in 20 years of gaming that doesn't work for me. And i'm a blody Software Engineer :)

and the forums at steampowered.com is down :(

I passsed thru that closing that window where you first type the authentication key, as I decided I would forget about it. Then I clicked on the HL2 desktop icon and it sent me to the section where you can press that button below that sayz, Register A Product That I already own, so I typed the key again and it worked.

Update: Problem Fixed.

Im not sure what actually did it, but i did the following.

uninstalled hl2.
uninstalled steam
installed steam
installed hl2
created a new steam account.

Ive had my steam installed for ages... Or it might have been the new account.

Its unlocking the files as we speak....

I will not change my account for this!

(tries to remove client*.blob)
