Edit Again : It loaded up about 10 seconds after i posted this

Yeah, it doesnt start at all now....I'll try restarting the computer

Well, it loaded. Says Steam is not able to connect. ;(

I've had a similar problem since yesterday afternoon. I can update Steam, but after I click 'Login' I get a message that says,

"Could not connect to Steam Network. Either the Steam network is currently not running, or your internet connection is down. Please check your internet connection and try again."

My connection if fine, that's how I downloaded Steam and received the updates... Not to mention I'm browsing the net right now. I've tried reinstalling Steam about 10x, rebooting, searching the net for new installer files etc. I was able to use the Steam beta just fine - I actually liked it! ;)
I'm running WinXP Pro (SP1).

Ward, the reinstallations were unnecessary. You see, currently over 100,000+ people are trying to download all the content, like DoD, CS, etc. This is crushing the content servers, and slowing them down to a near halt. Nine times out of ten, your connection simply times out while trying to log in, hence the message you are recieving (Could not connect to Steam Network. Either the Steam network is currently not running, or your internet connection is down. Please check your internet connection and try again)

Give it a few days, maybe even a week, and things will be back to normal. Just right now everyone is trying to get everything at once, which is just overloading the servers. Think of it as rush hour traffic, with a train wreck to the side of the road and a bunch of moron gawkers.

hey i wish we had the steam stats page we could tell what was going on that way

That's because they are retards and don't know theres such a thing called bit torrent.

This is stupid. I can't even play single player now. Nothing is loading. Well, steam loads, its in my taskmanager using a bunch of memory, but otherthan that, theres no sign of steam. No icon on my taskbar. Way to go Valve!

I guess it was a problem with the servers, I had the same problem then all of a sudden it started working again.

Steam in background

hey all, does anyone know why my steam dosn't want to come when I click on it?
I know its running, cause when i push ctrl+alt+del i can see the "steam.exe" is running?, Please help me, this has been going on in a few weeks now, and I don't know what to do..

Plz help.
-Jacob.

Thanks for reviving a 3 year old thread with a question with no relevance to it. -_-

In other news, How long have you waited before quitting?

I'm getting this problem too actually so there may be a point in reviving this. I can see it running in my task manager but it won't load! It was working this morning!

I think its spyware because the way i solved it was using the other account i still had on XP from when my parents had this computer to run Steam first than switching over to run it on the other side and it went fine

Yeah I think you are right I just did a scan and removal and now it works.

It happens to me every now and then. I don't think it is always spyware. My system is clean. It seems to be related to not getting to the net when it starts. For instance a different program starts an update at boot. That prevents steam from doing its thing. So it does start but never completes. I just ctrl+alt+del to bring forward the task manager highlight steam.exe in the process tab right click and select end process. Start a game and steam loads.

I am really ****ing pissed that steam doesnt help. I have been getting a message that says "unable to connect to library," I just downloaded steam again after it saying unable to connect to network. WHY THE **** ISNT IT WORKING? my brother and i use the same types of computer same router same connection yet, his steam works and mine does not.:sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::sniper::angry::angry::angry::angry::angry::angry::angry::cheers::cheers:

Steam error connection on Windows 7/Vista

For Windows 7/ Vista User:
  1. Go to Start Button > Control Panel > Windows Firewall.
  2. Click on the link to the left said "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall".
  3. Scroll through until you find Steam (normally have two), tick to allow both on Public Network and Private(Home/Work).
  4. If your Steam is not there please click "allow another program" button and browse to add it there. Done this step then click "OK".
  5. Still in Windows Firewall window; click Advance Settings > Inbound Rules; find Steam > click Enable Rules to the right panel. Do this on each 'Steam' listed there. Close the windows and you're done!

Note:
Sometimes windows might asked whether your Steam run; using compatible mode (winxp or something) just ignore or click cancel button. it will run just perfect later. I'm wondering why Steam does not collaborate with Microsoft regarding this matter since it is obvious so many people using Win 7 and Vista trapped into this kind of problem..
