Really it depends on the price and what you get. If it's competitively priced compared to the retail options, and you get the full monty of extras then I'll opt for steam. If it's evens then I'll buy the retail.

I'm not sure. I'm tempted to buy via steam becuase VALVe get more profit that way and also becuase (hopefully) it means I'll get the game unlocked when the US gets it, rather than having to wait the extra fortnight or so for it to come out in the shops here.

I'm pretty sure the retail release will be world wide rather than staggered.

Retail for me. I have to be able to hold the CD and drool over it for an hour....

Same here... droooooool.

im going to buy at at the store thou, like teh boxes ^^

CE all the way for me...

Unless i have to wait for a UK release in which case, Steam.
I'm seriously tempted to download the current content through steam first anyway so I wouldn't have to wait if the UK release date is kept quiet until the last minute. Not right now though. I'd wait until after the "you're raping bandwith by downloading if you're not buying over steam and each time someone does it they make Gabe cry blood" people have done it, but before the last minute Steam members flood to sign on after IGN proclaims HL2 has gone Gold. The way I see it, there's pleanty of time to download, so everyone will get a turn.

It depends. If it is cheaper, or comes out sooner, then I'll buy it through Steam.

Otherwise retail.

Since Valve hasn't released any info on Steam purchases, what would be the advantage of subscribing to Steam just for HL2? Wouldn't you just be giving Valve more money for what the game is actually worth? They should have it to where you sign on, pay with CC, and download some compressed file that contains the game and cd-key. Once downloaded, you can burn to a CD for backup (very necessary) or run from your PC. But, just like most games have to have the CD to run the game, you should have to log onto Steam to play HL2 so Valve won't freak with the piracy issue. I'd rather have that than subscribing $10 a month.

So people with notebooks that don't have immediate, ready internet access can't play because of Steam?

You can play Half-Life 2 either by picking it up through ordinary retail channels, or by downloading the pre-load in various stages online and then purchasing a registration key through steam.

Steam is not getting in the way of anyone picking up a physical copy of the game once it's released.

You will be able to do that.. as evidenced by the fact you can buy Condition Zero off Steam. The subscription plan is seperate.
