Turner Contemporary is currently working with acclaimed artists Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane to develop a Steam Powered Internet Machine.

Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane's practice is based within one of 'social sculpture' - creating situations as much as objects - to engage with broad and diverse audiences and traditions.

Steam Powered ComputeInternet Machine will make a literal link between the Industrial Revolution of the 1800s and the current Information Age within a working model by combining the chief engines of both the steam engine and the computer.

The work can, in theme if not form, also perhaps be seen to follow Britain's favourite painting: JMW Turner's The Fighting Temeraire (1839) that depicts sail power being superceded by steam.

Deller and Kane's work for Turner Contemporary will be presented in specific outdoor locations in Kent with partner organisations on weekends in July and August 2006.

why don't they use their brain in other sectors? waste products....

You've got to admit that's pretty cool though.

Before entering this thread, I thought it has something to do with the Steam :p

Anyway, this computer is really steampowered.

Picture mentioned in article.

Neat concept, a steamboat tugging a sailboat.

Coming soon: steam armour, difference engines, calculating cannons and intricate clockwork mobile 'buzz boxes'.

Weeee...now we can go to the internet without ELECTRICITY..but...how are we going to get online? :( SATELITE!

As long as it works better than early steam did!

/misses dod 3.1

Intresting marriage of old and new, though I'm not sure it's worth the drive to kent to see. Infact I'm sure it's not.

Wouldn't you just need to make a generator out of steam to power a computer, that is basically a server?

I fail to see how this deservers ANY attention. You've just got a mini power plant running on steam, that powers a computer.

DON'T YOU SEE?! SOON WE'LL HAVE STEAM POWERED FLYING CONTRAPTIONS, STEAM POWERED VEHICLE TRANSPORTATION, AN UNDERGROUND TUNNEL CONNECTING SWEDEN AND BRITAIN!

God, I cannot wait to ride on the steam powered bullet train and try out my new tesla coil gun on some unexpecting natives garbed in steam powered steel armor.

I can't wait to have everyone else go on steam power so that they'll worship me when I give them nuclear fission. :p

Huge steam-powered flying zep'lin fortress > nuclear fission.

fission bomb > .88 Flak > Huge steam-powered flying zep'lin fortress

EVERYBODIES IGNORING MY COMMENT!

HOW is this important?

It's a computer plugged into a ****ing steam power plant.

WTF I DO THAT EVERY DAY.
