how large was each stage of the preload and what files did it put onto my pc, i cant find the files that loaded phase 5.

Um, I think that they added to certain files each time, look at the C:\Program Files\Steam\ and look at the source files combined.

go to...
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\
or where ever you installed steam and you'll see all the GCF files which are the Game Data files for Steam. I'm not sure of the order of the files... but these are what it loaded...
base source shared materials.gcf
base source shared models.gcf
base source shared sounds.gcf
base source shared.gcf
half-life 2 base content.gcf
source dedicated server.gcf

Together they seem to take 4,16 GB of space on my HD...
Is there someone out there who has the same content?
