Last night: Installed Steam. Downloaded the the game packs from the web. Then proceeded to install Counter-strike. Ran Counter-strike to add my CD-key. Then ran Steam, found my installation, upgraded to the lastest version and voilà. It's really slow though.

Other than that NO problem.

wow you must be the only one, no one else can get it to work right.

Well that worked once for me, but as of today (this morning actually) things went bollocks, doggy style... nothing works, several attempts reinstalling, nothing... I cleaned my registry and defrag each time but no luck so far. It worked fine yesterday!... fudge.

A thought. Are you people still using Windows 95/98/ME?

I've had to install a few, all were XP installations and no problems to report at all.

It's always slow. But you just wait. In a day or so you'll find that it hangs/stops/crashes yor whole machine for no particular reason.
It's absolute rubbish is what it is.

this is just a guess but i think ur Steam was fine.. its just that there isn't alot of servers available.. last time i checked Steam status, 6 of them servers were down, and i checked again right now and 4 are down now.. so its quite possible that because of the server u were connected to, went down or something.. so just means u gonna have to be extra patient with Steam.

btw, im using Win98, and yes i have had tons of problems.. u name it, i probably had it.. but i think the reason why Steam is slow for me is because this comp has 128 SD ram.. im sure Steam is a ram/resource hog.. so having 512 ram of the latest type might help..

and yes, having Win2k or WinXP editions probably help too..

oh well.
