I downloaded steam today, since i gotta have it in 2 weeks or whatever is goin on. And it converted HL to its self so HL starts up from STEAM, but I cant start HL from its own icon. When I click on the icon STEAM loads and it says 'preparing Half-Life' it takes so ****ing long i just close it. WTF is up?

which installer did you use? if you used the small steaminstall.exe then steam is downloading HL, it'll take awhile, have some patience.

if you used the alrge steaminstall_cs.exe then you should be able to play HL and CS without downloading anything...

You shouldn't have to, but sometimes the content convertor doesn't work properly.

I didn't need to download anything special except CS (because I didn't have that before I installed Steam).

dont forget the latest patch also needs to be downloaded, I believe steam updates HL to Hl 1.1.2.0 and you cant play any mods if HL isnt up to date. I would suggest getting the precached pack, IM not a CS player, but I grabbed it anyway because it includes the HL update.
its still too early in the game to trust Steams cache status. it thinks it has enough content when it doesnt.
just be safe and grab the packs

Also even if you installed the precached package Half Life will take some time to start up because it is being unpacked and set up for use. Which doesn't happen at installation. This can take a while depending on what kit you have.

So I go the new Steam installed... I'm alL ready for HL2 to appear and... my beautiful set of HL2 Bink vids dissapear!

I don't even have "HL2 Movies" on my Games menu any more!

Why did Valve do this to me!

Be happy you are able to start Steam..... When I try to start It "Not able to conect to steam network" ... I Click OK and the program shut down ..... And they realy want to destroy the WON???
