Steam started when it was beta, won't start now

When I had the beta version of steam it would start. I've now had steam retail since it came out and have tried to connect to it everyday with no success. Anybody have a clue what's wrong?
I get this error message:
"could not connect to steam network
this could be due to a probem with your internet connection or with the steam network"

My internet connection works...

Have you downloaded the "full" version of Steam?

Or are you still using the beta version?

I got the full version, downloaded it twice. I'm also not behind a firewall. steampowered.com is really no help. They tell me to reconfigure my firewall, lol.

I got this at first, All I did was uninstall, then delete my steam folder hwich should be done becuas ethere were lots of left-over files in it. Then I just reinstalled a bisc pack and clicked on each individual mod under my original beta name and downloaded them a la carte... It took about 5 uninstall/reinstlal session before it finally worked. A ifrewall shouldn't have anyhting to do with it.
