:flame: This message came up when I started Steam 20 min. ago.
Steam - Error
Could not connect to Steam network.
Either the Steam network is currently not running, or your internet connection is down.
Please check your internet connection and try again.
Since you all can read this it is pretty easy to figure out that my internet connection is just fine. I'm just wondering if anybody else is having this problem.

I get this sometimes, it's usually when the US are awaken.

I usually just leave it and come back half an hour later and it works.

Yeah I got this yesterday (as well as the incredible dissapearing game cache) both problems were solved by shutting Steam down and restarting it 10 minutes later.

We shouldn't have to do that but until the Steam servers respond in a more timely and complete manner (bandwith is still the issue I assume) I guess we have to put up with it.

I have had this a few times, it just means that the UI (User Interface) has not been able to connect to main server to retrieve details.

As Feath has said it usually happens when there is a large amount of activity i.e. morning in US.

A restart of steam will generally do the trick, not sure about waiting 30 mins, it *always* (b0yce touches head at this stage) works the second time for me!

yep its when steam content servers are either under maintenance(offline), or simply full (content servers fill up)
to check to see whats up you can always visit:
http://www.steampowered.com/status.html
and it will show you the status (availability and functionality) of content servers currently available.
as more servers pop up, your gonna get less and less instances where you get that message.

Wow... almost 60% more total bandwith compared to the last time I checked (1350Mbps compared to 850Mbps)... and the GameSpy server is up again.

And Im never been able to connect to Steam.......

I have try the 3 last version of Steam ... [beta, un-beta, avec non-beta with Cs 1.6] Nothing work..... Im just able to type my user name password... and ... that's all ...

Sometimes you might think that its bad that we now have SteamId instead of WonId and so, but they will probably release a more stable version as soon as they can so it will probably be easier to connect and so on, so you will just have to wait and see

Why SteamID you ask? It is because they can have a lot more control with banning players that cheat and send updates easier and quicker.. All in all this system is great.

i was on steam yesterday but today i started steam a dozen times and 1 of these 2 things happen:

nothing happens, steam is in the task list but no steam icon in the tray
or the error from the starting post a few seconds after i click the icon of steam.

grrrrr...
