Updates to Steam have been released. The update will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. This release includes a number of very specific CPU and memory footprint optimizations brought over from the Half-Life 2: XBOX development codebase. The release also includes all of the engine groundwork to enable the Day of Defeat: Source launch that will happen Monday, September 26 at 3:00 PDT.[br]UPDATE: Many people are experiencing issues with this update. It is recommended that you do not restart Steam until the issues have been resolved.[br]UPDATE 2: Apparently another update has been released which should solve the problem with opening Source Mods.

is this a major optimization? it sounds like it :D

its a big update
wonder how it will change things - maybe shorter load times!!!!

See, porting it to the Xbox actually benefits PC users by forcing them to optimize the hell out of the game so they can squeeze as much power out of the aging console as possible.

valve should have waited for the xbox 360
less work and more business sense to be a flagship title on a new super machine
oh well

Who cares about a steam fix. When the hell are they releasing the new css model??!?!?!?!?!

I got dial-up its still at 96% it not progressing at all :(

It appears that this update also f00bs mods over, they all reckon that the gameinfo.txt is missing when it isnt. Nice one Valve.:d

Meh, i tried playing dust2 and i was getting 16fps and before the update i was getting 60-70fps..... :|

Edit: When i set hdr to on/off i get no change in fps. Perhaps the hdr option is bugged?

Got the same problem here.

hmm what have they done
probably won't be a new one or fix til next week when they're back at work :(

wtf I hope only you have that prob I,l be downloading CSS at my dads house today

Do they not test these things?

What do they do?

Doug: Hey lets release an update nad new if we can f**k anything else up.
Gabe: Great idea, while your at it lets delte the windows Dll

Working good for me. I believe stuttering is done and slight FPS increase.

HDR options are added (don't work obviously) and now they show DX9+ so I figure they are adding PS 3.0 or at least 2.0b.

Great update overall, making me excited for DOD.

Worked great for me too.

solaris, they've been trying to release it since Wednesday but they kept finding bugs. So yes, they do test.

I went over to the Steampowered forums to see if i could learn more about this update, but of course i get an error messsge...

Warning: Too many connections in /valve/www/forums.steampowered.com/forums_2.3.3/admin/db_mysql.php on line 40

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Too many connections in /valve/www/forums.steampowered.com/forums_2.3.3/admin/db_mysql.php on line 40

EDIT: heh now it says...

The Steam Forums are temporarily offline for maintenance. See www.steampowered.com for news and support. Thanks!

news, but this is actually great that you post it cause if i logged on steam would start updating and i wouldn';t get to play anything.

but still guys, phl is surpassing you on mod news, give did a break for a while :D

Yes, but I have to admit I got some FPS increase. Details should come out shortly.

Not only mods, I just tried to play and was getting <10 fps on office. Like wtf? I couldn't even hardly move.

I can't even get more then 8 fps on cbble and it locks up on the stress test. I hope they are working on a fix.

When I try to play online, my game crashes! WTF?
Anyone else experience this?

DO NOT RESTART STEAM!

Every single source mod is broken and all the source games hang before the main menu if even reached.

****up rating: A+

Cheers Valve I cant even play any of the games now... I could have coped with FPS drop but not they are completely ****ed.

now I'm scared to start Steam.
Same here.

You know something's off when the official STEAM forum goes down for a mere "optimization" update.

Worked fine here. Got a decent fps boost in CSS too.

Cant play any mods now, they all crash at the loading screen ;/

I haven't restarted steam yet. A friend of mine just did, and he can't start Half-Life 2 anymore. 10-1 says they are applying cpu specific optimisations to all cpus :p

I gained about 10 fps in the VST, though I must admit that I haven't tried that out in a long time.

Same here (9600XT) - about 10 fps more than i had before this update.

Only problem now is 3rd party mods, every mod i try to load it says that gametext.txt (or smt like that) can not be found.

Just sending an e-mail to Erik Johnson about the problems some people are having. I'll let you know if I get a response. I've basically asked him if they're rolling the update back.

This could delay DOD: Source......

I think they already noticed - there is already a 10 (prolly 11 by now) pages thread on that in steampowered.com forums :)

Mine freezes on the main menus too.
I had the same problem. Turns out ZONE ALARM was requesting access on the background.

But now, whenever I try to join a server, hl2.exe crashes and I return to the desktop. I can actually see people play for about 1.5 second before this happens.

Very very frustrating. Now where's my bottle of zubrowka? I have to kill time somehow.
