Steam Update Released

I'm having the same problem with my mods, but at least I can still play dod! I didn't see any fps problems of any kind.

Just sending an e-mail to Erik Johnson about the problems some people are having. I'll let you know if I get a response. I've basically asked him if they're rolling the update back.

This could delay DOD: Source......

Temporary fix for Mods ("gameinfo.txt is missing")

1)
Move your mod's folder from SourceMods/ to SteamApps/(account)/(game).

Create a desktop shortcut to the mod's parent game

Change the end of the shortcut to read -game <mod name>.
A working link to TeamFortress2 would be:
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game TeamFortress2
Assuming you installed Steam to the default folder and have already moved the TeamFortress2 folder.

2)
It seems to be searching for 3rd party mods in the SteamApps/your-email/half-life 2/ directory.

I found if you copy the mod from the SteamApps/SourceMods directory into the SteamApps/your-email/half-life 2/ directory it seems to fix the problem (all the configurations are reset though).

Mine runs at about 10spf(yes, seconds per frame), and took like 5 minutes to start a listen server, haven't tried joining an online one yet :(

It also switched me from dx 8 to dx9 when i rand the stress test, which was 1/4th of normal fps :/

My friends list doesn't work anymore

**runs away dodging bullets**

(seriously I can't play cs:s hangs everytime and console fills itself with errors before hang)

I had the same problem. Turns out ZONE ALARM was requesting access on the background.

There are launch options to force it to dxlevels - try whacking it back to DX8.

It's starts in dx8 just fine, but when i start the stress test it switches itself to 9 :/

EDIT:Maybe im wrong, HL2sp started in dx9, maybe i just read it wrong. on a related note, Hl2 sp works fine for me, with improved fps, ill check CS:S again soon.

EDIT2:found the problem, HDr is on by default, so it sets my video mode to dx9(8 doesn't support hdr)

I will be mad if this affects DOD:S launch!

Hope they have people at Valve working overtime on this!

I have mixed feelings over this release. On one hand, I have noticed a performence boost, and some maps are now playable. CSS maps like office and dust are still unplayable outside, but performence is still better. However this is still not at the level of performence I had before the bot patch; where all this crappy FPS rates started.

And the fact that I can't play GMod makes me want to break stuff. :\

I'm trying to take this well, but I really cannot understand how this could have gotten out the door. How the hell could they have given the 'OK' to release this stuff?

In other news, I got a nice email from Eric Smith saying that the missing-messages problem in MINERVA should now be fixed. Wahey!

...

Anyone want to test? I'm not sure I dare. ;-)

why do i have a 700mb DOD:S file in my CGF folder?
I didn't preload, and it's downloading right now

If you have silver it might autodownload.

Also, it seems to give me quite a good fps boost in HL2SP, Im gettig 10 more fps(40->50) while the texture quality is set to high(was medium)

Will post CS:S results soon.

Very strange. Everything is working fine for me (apart from mods, that is. First party games are working fine). The CS:S stress test game me the usual 84fps with everything on high

troll, common, if ya say "valve rocks" your a fanboi, "valve sux" your a troll.

I admit, i hated the lies and the year delay, and i can't stand steam, for these very reasons. im kinda new to online gaems in a way, but the days of getting a good patch, everyone staying with it, are gone with steam. alot of peoples setups are fuxored now. whats the point of finishing a mod, cateloging it, and moving on, when one single steam update can totally ruin it unless you get a coder to come back and fix it?

steam could be great, they could fix it, i dunno if fixing it would be in their business plan. number one thing they should do is redundancy on their website. have updates downloadable from there, rather then autoupdated in steam. people say all the time " go into offline mode, or turn off automatic updates" but alot of people don't think to do that, and sometimes you cna't go into offline mode and play until an update is done.

im excited about whoever it was getting dod when not preloading it. i spent 2 weeks trying to update hl2 after i reformatted. I backed up my games like i was suppose to before reformatting, but it still took 2 weeks. come to find out, over those 2 weeks i installed like hl, and all these hl1 games and mods and stuff, without my knowledge. that was kinda ok, like a suprise but it would be nice if steam told me it was downloading a couple gig of content to my harddrive

yeh i like the fact they have forced ur HDW to use DX9 and added that HDR button (but not in use yet) But im experiencing major loss of fps, im having to currently play in 648x480 in order to get decent frame rate. B4 this update i was playing on 1024x768. So im not sure what fuked it up, im guessing tho its the DX9 being forced onto my card. Also has any-1 noticed there is better sound quality? or is it just me :p

i'm getting some fps stutters now (not audio thankfully)
and it won't let my use my HL2 benchmark program, so i can't see if i get more fps.
and i think some of teh CSS svr browsers messed up on me too

CS:S works fine, improved FPS, only 3rd party games broken for me.

Sucked at first, then i resterted my computer, i suggest everyone try that.

Lister: add -dxlevel 80 to the command line to run in DirectX 8

Nice 1 cheers.

Im experiencing also sum stutters on the menu for CS:Source

Half-life 2 and CS:S seem to run fine for me. The new HDR option doesn't seem to do anything, unless its just for DoD:Source and Lost Coast. (but hopefully people can make HDR optimized maps)

Is it just me or has STEAM just being updating again? But nothing on their site!

You sure? They're still not working for me. :/

EDIT: And yes I did restart Steam. :p

HDR won't do anything for CS:S, because it's only DOD:S and Lost Cost. I have heard that it won't be ever added to HL2 and CS:S, but that may not be true.

I don't know what you are talking about when you mention "HDR optimized maps". HDR is an engine thing, it has nothing to do with the maps.

Garry's Mod works for me, but there's this weird white line going from the bottom left of the screen to the top right. I've never seen that before.

We are currently tracking two issues with the latest update.

Laggy performance since the patch. The update overwrote the config.cfg for all games. If you had made any specific tweaks such as to the DXLevel to improve performance these will need to be added to your config.cfg again.

Unable to play mods because of missing gameinfo.txt. This issue has been fixed and we will update Steam shortly.

Sorry for the issues this update has caused folks. If you are having any other issues please visit our support site and submit a ticket detailing the problem.

No..it DOES have to do with the maps.

Theres lighting options you can use for HDR....how strong of lighting for blur and stuff.

If it was strictly the engine..then ALL source maps would have HDR, and I just played hl2 and theres no HDR there.

Grand update by Valve, now HL2 crashes and the error report lists my CPU as amd, while I actually have a P4.

For those with major lag, try re-adding hl2.exe from the CS:S directory to your firewall's permit list, it helped in my case. i had normal ping in the Steam browser, but in-game my favorite servers were not responding, and those that responded had a ping of over 200. I don't know why did the firewall decide to block it again, even though it was configured to allow it. Maybe Valve fiddled with hl2.exe and it's different now.
