It was confirmed at gamespot's rumour section that you do need an active internet connection for installation.

So, if you don't have the internet, you still can't play half-life 2.

No, nobody thought about those that don't have internet, because they are too few to be a market force, and most of them could somehow get a connection for a couple of minutes (a friend's account, for example) just for activation.

And the activation is a great authentication tool (anti piracy) and is a new level above the cd key used in hl1.

Not everything is bitchable.

I remember a while back when there was still the threat of HL2 coming out before Gabe and co. got Steam's offline mode running... damn, that feels like a year ago.

You can play HL2 while Steam is in offline mode- but you'll still need to connect to Steam once after HL2 is installed to authorise your copy on the master server. Woo.

I'm a bit annoyed that the whole authentification thing seem to stop you using the same account on two computers - if I just wanted to play CS:Z on the 2nd computer, I have to buy another copy (at least I can't get it to work without Steam complaining). I think that's a bit over the top.

Yes, you're quite right. I don't expect to be able to run the same Steam account on 16 different computers or anything, but other games will generally let you have two.

BTW, I understand the whole 'licensing' thing, I just think it's unfair and confusing
