I built a new computer specifically to play HL2. I didn't care about online, so the thing doesn't even have a modem installed - it is an offline computer. So, how do I get HL2 to work? This blasted "Steam" thing doesn't give the option of "I have no online," and it ticks me off a little more every time I try to do crap like get drivers to work or configure something that the computer assumes it is online or can get online or tries to connect to a blasted thing when it can't.

It's a legit, storebought HL2. I'd post the CD key if I didn't know that it would be immediately stolen and then I wouldn't be able to get online even if I somehow got my computer to do that.

Computer stats on demand (I'm...kinda... at work posting.)

Well Steam needs to be online once to authenticate the files, after that you can run in offline mode.

If you have an "online" computer, I would recommend sharing the connection and doing it that way.

You can see that you can play in offline modus if you rightclick on "Half-Life 2", select "Properties" and there is "Ready" after "Offline Mode".

Yeah but I think you at least need to log-on once.

Sigh... Well, that could be a problem. But then, I guess I better get my computer sometime online this month before Windows stops working.

But you spend $1800 on a computer for gaming, suddenly, that month-to-month bill for Internet looks like a car payment and insurance, or part of the utilities.

teh internets is cheap. What on earth do you mean?

When you buy a game look at the requirements, for HL2 you will see "Internet connection REQUIRED"

QFT. If you knew you needed an internet connection then you would have at least bought a little network card so you can trundle round to a friends house who has it and plug into their network.
