Stewart and Colbert to announce something soon.. (Restoring Truthiness?)

Yeah, I only have a digital camera that can record video. And my phone. Which are ok but not ideal. Will have to see if I can get my hands on an actual video camera.

photos are good enough. take plenty of shots of crazy teapartiers and their stupidity laden signs. also take pics of hot chicks ..on either side of the political fence :)

Damn I'm only 1 hr from DC but I got exams to study for at that time. Though tbh I'm probably too lazy to go anyways. Especially considering how large this thing is going to be, traffic will be hell, though the subway is probably going to be a good idea for those of you going. Avoid half the headache.

Damn, if I only lived an hour away, I'd be all over that. Convince your professors to join and have them give you an extension as a result.

I'll make sure to take a ton of pictures with my gf's camera. I'm so excited :D

I'm trying to find a room in Washington but don't know anything about the area. Is fairfax pretty safe? I found a good room there close to the subway which could take me straight to capitol hill.

By safe I ofcourse mean are there alot of black people there?

Yeah, during the day, of course.

I was kinda a bit scared shitless a tad at 1 AM walking back to my hotel because the metro closed at like 11:30. If you plan on going out at night, try not to be out after midnight unless you're carrying some sort of melee weapon/firearm. (... sarcasm, just so no-one takes this to be seriousness)

American politics is a joke. You're countries being overtaken by tea party morons and you have a 'restoring truthiness' rally?!

There is an interview with Stewart in todays The Times, UKers, go buy it and read :D

Since when did Stewart and Colbert stop being comedians? And since when have they been major figures in politics?

Also, it's restoring sanity.

It's not restoring truthiness, it's Rally to Restore Sanity for Stewart and March to Keep Fear Alive for Colbert. At least they're aware of the ridiculousness of it all; the same can't be said for tea partiers and their media supporters.

I haven't been paying attention to politics much this summer, but what other big response has there been to the crypto-fascist-xenophobe-randian Tea Party cocktail that is currently masquerading as rebellion but functioning as a prop for the economic orthodoxy?

I miss the old Solaris that didn't suck.

The problem with this country is bullshit. Bullshit that far too many people buy into. Which allows crazy organizations, such as the tea party, to gain national attention. I honestly believe the few honest people left in our media are a couple of guys that come on at midnight on a comedy channel (and their writers of course). And I'm gonna do my best to support them, as absurd of an idea as that might seem to you.

And I love the hypocrisy of people that live in the UK talking shit to us. Don't get me wrong, I love your country. But you have just as many crazy ass people as we do. The idea that muslims are invading America is fairly new here, you guys have had that meme about them invading your country for years now. Our politics might be totally ****ed up, but don't act like your shit is all in order when it clearly isn't.

They are still comedians. And they have been major figures in politics for a long time. Being a comedian and a person involded in politics have never been contradictory ideas. I think their success has to do with not peddling bullshit, which unfortunately is very unique when it comes to major media outlets.

I really wouldn't consider either to be major figures in politics itself. They're well-known names, but not because of policy advocacy or anything like that. They're good at satirizing it. Now that I think about it, maybe that's a meaningless distinction, I dunno. I'm just saying they are primarily entertainers, not enactors of government change.

None, much to my chagrin. But the way I read it seemed like Solaris had misplaced expectations from a rally led by Stewart and Colbert. It's not like they're going to use it to directly attack the Tea Party or unveil some vision for America as an alternative to conservatives. I'd say that's kind of outside their scope as entertainment. It's to show in general how ridiculous our discourse in politics has become.

Well the fact that they are comedians further emphasises my point.

A while back in one of these threads we were discussing a study that found a shockingly high percentage of Americans used the daily show or the colbert report (whatever that is) as there primary or only source of news.

Comedians should not be the people organising big political rallies, but it seems the media and political situation in the US is so poor that they are the only people in a position to do it.

And No-Limit, UK politics is a hundred times more intellectual intelligent and informative. Over here, Sarah Palin wouldn't be elected to run a libary, never mind a state.

Why does the fact that they are comedians matter? Who do you want to organize rallies? The unions and other liberal groups had a rally on Saturday, about 200,000 people came out. This event got almost no promotion and still had a couple hundred thousand people come out. Is that cool with you?

And you are absolutely sure that if we look at all the elected officials in the UK we won't find any idiots? We might want to ask the BNP that. How many years has it been now that the ban mosques movement has been a popular political theme on your side of the pond?

Yeah, I don't think that's a very real distinction. They might not regularly advance policy positions but they do try to keep the political discourse honest. Which I think makes them very important political figures.

And with this rally I think it does attack the tea party in a direct way. It shows that they are insane and despite all the attention they get they are a very small minority in this country.

AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA

I'm sorry.

hahahahahahaha oh boy

I think he has a point. Palin would be unelectable in canada ..other than a seat in council somewhere in butt**** saskatchewan. canadians hate stupidity more than they hate corruption in their elected officials ..plus she wouldnt have a base to talk to as there isnt that equal of a political divide in canada like there is in the US

I'm starting to think she has a real shot at the presidency ..no really, besides the interwebs she's pretty popular with the unwashed masses. strategic appearances on fox news/ dancing with the stars sure does help

at this point it wouldnt surprise me if she's elected in 2012

There is no way Palin could be elected in this country in any kind of national election. The point you made about her only being able to be elected in Canda if it were in "butt**** saskatchewan" can be made here too. She was elected governor of Alaska. And when she was her positions were a lot more moderate than they are today. She didn't take a hard turn to the right until she saw the amount of cash she could make off such a move.

We have over 300,000 million people. Canada has 1/10th of that. The UK 1/5th. So just by going off the numbers the odds of us having crazy people in our country is much more likely. And I'm not trying to say that we are just as smart as you guys are when it comes to politics. But things aren't as bad here as you guys are trying to make it out to be (the tea party sure as hell is not taking over). And things aren't as perfect in your neck of the woods as some people tend to think.

I'm not saying the US is full of stupid (closer to 3/5 ;) ) what I'm saying is that the US's 2 party system polarises americans between two political identities. Palin appeals to the base that now makes up the majority of repulican supporters; tea party/ religious/ anti-democrat. there's no one that appeals to traditional conservative issues (that arent social issues; big government etc) ..it's the republican's strategy; coddle hardliners, appeal to the rest with softball issues that appeal to their demographics

you've elected stupid twice before

And that would work for Palin in the republican primaries (if the republicans truly are that stupid) but it would never work in a general election. The best thing that could happen to Obama supporters in 2012 is if somehow Palin would win the primaries. But all the polls so far seem to show that even that is extremely unlikely.

you've "elected"* stupid twice before

Fixed.

it worked for Bush in his second term. all you really have to do is shift the focus away from incompetance to showing that your opponent is a socialist overlord hellbent on changing america in to a muslim mecca. it's already working. palin has some serious support behind her by some well funded influential people even at this early a stage. she's being groomed for the oval office

Palin has an approval rating somewhere around 30%, you can't get elected with those kinds of numbers nationally. She might have a shot in Iowa in the primaries but no way in hell is she winning New Hampshire. And with a entire "news" network devoted to calling Obama a socialist he still has an approval rating of around 50%, so I don't think that line of attack is as effective as people thing. They certainly tried that in the 08 elections and it didn't work.

The tea party movement is the best gift the democrats could have hoped for this election season. You have races that they didn't stand a chance in that they will now likely win. Even a senate seat in Kentucky is up for grabs.

clinton had similiar ratings as obama half way through his presidency ..and then something happened

He got a blow job and as a result his approval ratings shot way up?

Yes, but even in his first term right about now was about the lowest he ever got (lower than where Obama is), when the republicans got control of the house and senate. But after that his approval ratings kept going up until they went past 60% at the end of his administration.

Ok hotel booked, it's in McLean VA which is hopefully a good area. It's pretty close to the metro too. 3 1/2 weeks, cant wait!

I didn't look at that site yet, so far everyone I've seen on there is horrible. But "legalize it" would be an awesome sign, dont' act like you don't like it.

By it, you mean some sort of perverted gay thing, right?

Shame on you for calling gay marriage a perversion.

Welp, my grandfather died this morning (he's been in a coma for about a week, this is no surprise) and looks like the funeral is on Saturday, so I've had to cancel my plans to go to the rally. I'm super disappointed, this really looks like it will be a huge event. Oh well. I will live vicariously through those of you who do go. Please take as many pictures and videos as possible!

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss Ennui, and I'm also sorry you won't be able to go to the rally, since I know you were looking forward to it.
