still puzzled with my geforce 6600gt

Hey, a while back I posted about not getting very good frame rates in hl2 with my GeForce 6600GT AGP card. My computer has a 2ghz P4, 512 ddr 266 ram, 60gb hard drive, with a 4xagp. I have been playing CS:S and on fy_iceworld_real I have been getting barely 30fps if im lucky, sometimes it will jump to 60 depending on where I look, but mostly around 20 fps!! My res. is set at 1028x768 with everything on high, 2x aa, 16af and yes I know I should probably expect that with such high settings, but even when I completely lower EVERYTHING with no aa, or af and set my res. to 640x480. I get the same fps!!

My card idles at about 57 degrees, and when i've been playing half life for an hour and check out the temp again its still 57-58 degrees... Although when I play Need for speed underground 2 with all the settings maxed out it runs fine, and my card temp jumps to 70 degrees. Im thinking that its my processor that is bottlenecking it, because NFSU 2 isnt nearly as processor intensive, becase it doesnt have to calculate all the physics. Correct me if im wrong though! any suggestions would be great.

i dunno what to tell you
my friend has a geforce 6800 and an intel processor ( i think its like 3 ghz)
and my setup gets better fps than his (see siggy)
i dunno, i have a sneaking suspcion that intel cpus are rebelling against gaming, cause i have almost never seen an awesome score with a 6800/intel match on hl2. Maby its just me *shrugs*

Sounds liek something in your system is bottlenecking why your agp speed so low ??

if u can bump it up to 8

Well... my motherboard has agp 4x not 8x. Thats why :p If I could I would, but I don't really think that 8x is a whole lot of difference compared to 4x. I highly doubt it is my problem. Any more help would be great.

Your system has similar specs to my old system, I'm afraid the game is so CPU dependant that you won't get better fps than what you are getting with your present processor (used to get 30-40 on an XP2400+ with 66000GT at 1024x768 trilinear no AA all high, now I get 80-120fps with same card on amd64 3500)

Absolutely correct.

It would seem that your CPU is holding you back, I would think about getting a 64bit AMD Chip, they are the best chips for gaming at the moment, and you can pick one up for a decent price just now.

It does sound like you are bottlenecking. Maybe its a defective card. I know when I first got my 6600gt, it was defective and I only got 10 fps no matter what settings I had it on. I got a replacement and now all is well. But you probobly are bottlenecking.

Another thing to note. The Nvidia 6 series only goes up to 4x AA and 8X AF, any higher and it just defaults to nothing. SO technically you are running with trilinear filtering, or probobly just 8x AF.

A couple of things you might try, before you give up.

Make sure that your using something that forces a refresh rate other than XP's default, which is 60hz, Try the program Refreshforce.

There is also a setting for this in Geforce properties, called "refresh rate overides", choose your res, then change the default to suit your resolution, my res is 1024*768, therefore my refresh rate is 85hz, although my monitor can handle upto 100hz.

Also turn V sync off, you will find the setting somewhere in your Geforce settings page, Either on the OpenGL & Direct3D pages.

You should also be aware of the fact that online framerate is different from offline framerate, Your Internet connection and subsequent bandwidth can effect your framerate in online games, Don't believe me? then fire up a game offline, then play online with the same game, And see your framerate drop, In some cases by half.

Hope that helps, a little!

Yes I believe you on that one. I played the train bridge level on singleplayer, whatever one it was where you are under the big train bridge and I got around 50-60 fps, which is much better than what I get online.

My 9800 pro is running 1024x768 high settings with 4x AA 4x AF (I'm gonna try raising them soon) and it used to be choppy a lot and take long to load stuff but then I went from 512MB to 1GB of RAM and now it's perfectly smoorth even from the start, even with just a 2.2ghz P4. So maybe upgrading RAM would help too. And my RAM's only running at ddr266 speeds because of my cpu and still performing that well.

Couldn't some of the FPS decrease be due to the fact that in an online game you would be seeing a few player models?(Some)

Turn off anti aliasing anyway, trilinear filter and 800x600.

But I don't know my computer is a 2.666 Ghz Celeron D.

I heard nothing but people saying Celeron can't play games, but My HL2 runs at like 100 fps with a 9250 PCI card.

I can't see how your pentium would only get 20 fps.
You might need more memory and to shut down some programs before runing hl2.

What is 512 MB 266? 266 is the speed?

I have 2 sticks of 512MB 400 mhz. getting the 2nd one made a big difference. recomended

you have SPYWARE and VIRUSES . stay away!!!
