Urgent news, the reason you never noticed much of a difference with the new patch... is because the PATCH IS NOT ENABLED.

you have to manually set it up, here's how to do it:

Type in the console:

mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 1

Or make a new Cfg (or modify it) and add that same line.

i did it recently, thanks to browsing the Guru3D forums, it runs faster than before, i DO get stuttering, but i get MUCH less than before.

I posted it here as well as hardware & software, i figured in Half-life 2 Discussion, it would alot more attention.

I already sent news to the people at planethalflife.com, and will soon take over of spreading the news for me.

Got this from hl2 world, who got it from sven coop forums. He's right I did this and my fps went up from 20 to 40.

Thanks, I'll try this. I still get stuttering, but it's MUCH worse when I put it on High texture quality, but I think this is mostly due to the fact that I only have 512MB of RAM.

For me, it was the "1" value was enabled by default, and it destroyed my fps and general gameplay experience. I turned it to "0" and had a much better time. I honestly think that it just depends on your system, most likely your amount of ram and video card.

Now, I got that however my sound soemtimes cuts out when I'm playing HL2 or CS:S but whenever I get back to desktop, I can play music fine so I think I can rule out over-heating. I would make a new thread but, I'm lazy. Please help.

there is another way to do it.

some people have dicovered that by extracting the GCF files in its appropriate locations the stuttering have actually stopped
now it is nothing illegal as some people may think since there is a warez version that actually requires you to extract the files but you dont do the stuff that bypasses steam ( as just extracting the files and adding a command in a autoexec.cfg you still required to go through steam) all you are doing is doing what the game does anyways ahead of time

from what i understand the stuttering is caused when the game is accessing those compressed files when it needs to and extracts what is needed... but since you did it ahead of time the game no longer has to go into the compressed files to get the files it needs making the game stutter free

I was getting more stuttering after than before the recent patch, and have an nvidia 6800GT.

Valve sets the cvar mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware = 0 for nvidia cards, so as an experiment I made an .../hl2/cfg/autoexec.cfg and put

mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware "1"

into it, and in the motherboard bios set AGP Aperture to 256meg(was 128m), with FastWrites Off (was on).

The combination of these 3 changes has eliminated the stuttering. Which made the difference someone else can determine, but give them a try. I'm extremely happy now with gameplay.

There is no space in the command guys. The forum splits up words after they reach a certain length.

still doesn't help me. 6800gt. i started a new game and heard 4 seperate sound skips before even stepping off the train.

i can't find the "fastwrite" tab on display properties anymore , and something strange happened i've got an nvidia 6800 gt however my drivers tells me that i've got an 6800 ultra ??? what's the deal ??

OMG!!! I tried changing my AGP Aperture to 256meg (which is how much physical memory the graphics card can use) and I turned off AGP Fastwrite and the skipping has practicaly stopped!
If you haven't tried it give it a go.

Well done that man!

bx, I don't know about nVidia cards, but the fastwrite option is under SmartGart.

Mine stutters, but its alwats before an explosion or some other physics moment. is this the same problem you guys are having?
