Stingy Americans?: U.N. official's comment hits nerve

There's lots of jingoistic crap in this thread, the best thing you can do as an American or as a member of any other country in the world is donate to disaster relief fund. How much is donated by countries themselves is up to the governments, not you so you don't have to feel responsible or try and defend yourself.

Also, no one’s saying that Americans themselves aren't generous enough, since that's a sweeping generalization that just isn't correct.

Mechagodzilla and Mortiz are wise old sages of the highest order.

If I said I was not a jingo, I would be lying. But yeah, I think everyone just donating is the best.

because you give us every reason to
Donating 350 million dollars is a reason to bash. Man it must feel great having no morals.

Private citizens donate the money through
A. taxes
B. relief organizations such as the Red Cross
saying that normal people dont pay is ridiculous.

And then there'd be a thread on the forums where seinfeldrules gets angry and Stern tells him to stop being angry and someone says something about Iraq and I would be very sad because thinking about the 'war on terror' makes me sad/angry.
I'm the angry one? Stern is the one to usually turn to insults...

Anyways, just more evidence of the hypocrisy.

you're the one who has no problem with this:

"we think it was worth it" - Madeleine Albright

I love that quote :E

YOU TAKE THAT BACK YOU $%#!!!@! <insert insult here>

If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program.

We must stop Saddam from ever again jeopardizing the stability and security of his neighbors with weapons of mass destruction

some favorite quotes and figures of mine. Actually, I dont like the figure at all, I find it disgusting.

Ah.. so its not "The" USA (in the "current government" sense of the phrase) thats donated the money? rather... ordinary people.

Hmm.. seems like the only reason you have such a high figure is due to the large population of the US, and very little else.

omg, so many narrow minded comments.... its not about the US or Europe,, or whos poor , or rich.. its about the world , and humans as a unit.. all this plite over whos doing what.. is somehow valid for sake of global impressions?, egotistical nonesense, which is quite scary to hear.

Bravo to that comment.

Hey, the UN let Saddam squander 12 billion. My conscious is perfectly clear.

And the fact that we have an incredible economy. China and Russia have more people, yet dont donate as much, or even close.

Russia was run into the ground by the US during the Cold War, and are barely recovering..
China is only just beginning to have the massive industrialisation that occured to the US at the beginning of the 2nd world war, ending a period of relative isolationism.
Compared to the US, China is poised for massive power in the coming years

And ask yourself, who would you rather have as your ally? Consider the US evil all you want, but that question should deserve some thought.

Oh of course, I mean, China would no doubt impose crazy nationalistic controls on everyone and some odd re-branded communism, while the US does something similar, but isn't as up-front about it, its got the rampant nationalism, and re-branded commercialism/neo-conservative outlook, but its hidden behind a heap of smoke & mirrors.

To be honest, life would be worse having china as a world power instead of the US.
But, part of me would feel a little better at least knowing what the government was.
Ideally, China should compete with the US, rendering cheap goods and trade for all! and a surge in technology due to a second Cold War of sorts..

Yeah. I was actually editing before the 15 minute mark passed(got distracted). Here's the edit.

EDIT: I only say that, because you're so blinded by your hatred for the united states, that you seem to forget that there are caring people in all countries, and the US is one of them. There are countless charities and organizations for helping not only internal problems, but also foreign affairs like feeding starving children in poor third world countries, and citizens of the states helping rebuild infrastructure of war torn and otherwise damaged countries. Or people from the states volunteering their time overseas to teach young students in schools of other impoverished countries, not because the pay is good(probably nonexistant), but out of the kindness of their hearts to make a difference.

But... you're too blind to see that. You're so naive to think that all americans are stupid and evil based upon the government alone. You of all people should know that a government does not define the people it rules over. Judging by your attitude with the states, I bet you had a deep disrespect and hatred for the Iraqi people when they were under Saddam's regime too.

Ah... well, I may argue that upon seeing my comments, being blinded by your crazily overboard Pro-US patriotism, you branded me as a "liberal terrorist" before even reading my posts...

I dont hate Americans, as I said in a post a while ago, you're individually quite good, but the thing I was objecting to was the fact that things like charity are manipulated by the US government in an attempt to justify activities that have attracted criticism..
Kinda like "oh.. about iraq... Hey! look over there!"

Three words.

Yep:
Stingy? How about we spend this money in America to fix our own problems first. Then we'll see how stingy they want to call us when they get nothing. We are putting other nations ahead of our own and we are called stingy? Get real you arrogant prick.
Ranty. (Remember this is all based on the word "stingy" being used by someone who isn't an american to describe countries that might not include america. UN guy's a prick for that?)
Anyways, just more evidence of the hypocrisy.
Indeed.

I just thought it was pretty funny that he ranted about the UN guy being an arrogant prick, and then said that he wasn't angry and that calling him angry is evidence that I'm confused or something.

So, I'd warrant that I'm not the confused one. :p

350$ million on this. 15$ billion on AIDs. Yes he is a prick. All this when it is just coming out that Saddam squandered 12$ billion in so called aid.

Better be glad I'm not in office.. i'd give em a good reason to call us stingy... fuc kin' ingrates

lol :)

Made me chuckle.

exactly, we should just not give aid anywhere, unless its to nations that are generally nice to us or genuinly like us, and screw the rest.

Woohoo \o/

The best bit is - we'll all get to watch the action on tv.

I heard on my local radio, something about the french being forced to pay extra taxes to aid in the relief fund. Is anybody able to find any information on this? I'm just curious, why the french would have to be forced to 'donate', rather than making the donations willingly, if this is true?

I think its good America has give 560million, the only thing i get a annoyed at people that go "we should stop handing out moeny for 1 year and see how much they need us", same with people from Europe, oceania ect
