Anybody have any experience with some programs out there that simulate stock investment in the real world, preferably using historical data as a basis?

My dad and my brother are interested in playing the stark market after learning a lot about it, and are interested in looking into a simulation program that will better train them to react to a changing market.

So before I delved into research for them, I figured maybe I'd throw it out here first and see if any of you have had experiences with various softwares... or perhaps in the actual stock market.

You can create a 'virtual account' with most online stockbrokers, nothing better than realword experience and you can practice all you like without fear of losing money, it's just a bit of a downer when you invest in a company that does really well and you would have made thousands but it counts for nothing!

This.

As for having simulations based on historical data, well the whole risk behind the stock market is it's volatility. To have a simulation based on historical data wouldn't really make sense since the market is based on the current and future data (e.g. Oil price, interest rates, revenues, etc.), not the past.

Can you guys provide a few sites that do have these virtual accounts? I'm not seeing any.

Why would you bother investing in imaginary or historical stock when you can just invest in the actual stock going on right now :p (not with real money of course) That'd be the best training of all.

Some googling:

You don't even need to do it electronically, but you're probably too lazy to do it on paper.

If I had the money, I'd be dabbling in the stock market. You know, investing in a diverse set of stocks is the best way to keep your money. The growth of stocks, even in dry periods like today, usually far outpaces inflation or government bonds.

We're doing this exact thing in my econ class, which I think uses data from the actual stock market. The thing is, I can't remember the site because I never actually do any work in that class.
