A lot of you may be interested in this website I've found. As the title says, its about chernobyl. Elena, the person who has written about the place has taken photographs too. I found it in the TV guide that came with the Mail on Sunday:

http://www.kiddofspeed.com/chapter1.html

Been around for a long time now, but well worth the read for anyone who hasn't seen it.

The bit found in Chapter 2, about the origins of the name Chernobyl, was quite intriguing

kind of eerie... some disturbing facts we never heard about in north america:

the russian government reported between 300 and 300,000 casualties from the meltdown at Chernobyl. (they say they will never know the true amount)

the initial explosion could be felt from as far as Switzerland

the area around Chernobyl will be contaminated for 40,000 years; humans wont be able to return for 300 years

when it first happened the firefighters from the area thought they were fighting a regular fire...most of them died within a month of radiation burns

a giant lead box is all that protects the melted reactor from seeping into the atmosphere...in some places there are holes big enough to drive a truck through

Werg...scary. I believe it's a fact that if the wind had blown a different diretion,. we'd all be dead? Or something like that.

Elena and her farther's lives are interesting as well. People think she's nuts when she says she is going into the dead zone. Her farther had doubts that Elena's grandmother was far enough

heh, not quite but the fallout from the radioactive winter did affect thousands of kilometers around the hotzone

what got me was that when it happened people reported seeing the nearby forest glowing red

heh she is a little nuts...there's a pic of the long road to the deadzone completely devoid of any sign of life...that would be enough to keep me away...I've seen one too many "atomic zombies rise from the dead" movies

That was strange, mind you it was dark when you could see the glow

ya but...the trees ...they glowed!!! red!!! freaky

I tell you it must but eerie to be greeted by the people in the protective suits at the checkpoint

As a person from the UK, I will give you a fact about what happened here. There were problems with contaminated fields that farmers culled the livestock to prevent being sold off contaminated

hmmm how many of those same farmers were too poor to cull their livestock? hmmm makes you think maybe a few of them made it to market

Mind you, I think it was farmers in the south of England and Wales, but I would have to do more research

About chapter 10. According to my Dad, the company that he works at will be making a permanent Sarcophagus to last for quite some time

kinda scary cuz it happened almost 20 years ago

I wonder if radiation could make burgers come alive.

In Soviet Russia, burger eats you!

Yeah, and in the United Kingdom, sheep F*ck you.

That reminds me, have you ever heard about that deer they found in vietnam. They said it had gills or something on the side of its nose

Wow, somehow I thought that story was very touching. I saw a documentary about chernobyl awhile ago on discovery, this perfected it.

No. Although I have always thought they used the war as an excuse for some pretty nasty chemical testing...

Anyway...this site makes me think. Among other things, it makes me think: will tehre be a motorbike in Stalker?

Yeah here in sweden people were not allowed to pick berries or anything from the nature for a while after the incident.

Old, but extremely interesting site.. It freaked me out totally.

Yeah after this incident there were elevated Raditation levels on the East Coast of Ireland.(Even if you take into account Sellafield)And Ireland is pretty far away, think about the dose of Radiation Bellarus got from a plant not even in their country.

I know it may be alittle sick, but does anyone know of a website(s) that show pictures of animals that have had their DNA changed by the Radiation and mutated? I know I have seen afew along time ago but Im not sure where.

This is truly sad, I really want to go there and just bask in the silence... probably one of the only quiet places on earth.

I've found this website, don't know if it has animal deformities, but have a look, your bound to find something interesting.

www.paranormal.about.com

Plus, check this site out, this also freaky if you think about it, not sure whether to make a seperate thread for it

I think the giant earthworms mentioned in Godzilla actually exist at Chernobyl... and I know that there are some very strange mutant trees there, at least. Wierdly shaped leaves, and all that jazz. Apparently some of these mutations are quite stable...

hmm.. I've heard much about the Mechanism of Antikythera, that site just makes it all look it was work of aliens....please....

the Greek managed to build it, but it was so expensive, seemed to attract so much wrath from the Gods, and so to the end of the Greek Civilization that none was ever built until the Dark Ages, at which time the knowledge was obviously llost.

Thats a nice read, but i have read it before. Yay cant wait 'till S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow over Chernobyl(took me ten minutes to write that out )

Yeah I dont think we give our ancestors enough credit.I mean most people look at Mythology as fairy tales for children, however there has to be some basis of fact.

An example is the city of Troy, believed to be myth until excavation revealed multiply cities there one of which was surronded by a massive wall, very like the wall surronding the city of troy in the "myth"

What has been called Magic may have been an understanding of Technology and its use.The Atlanteans may have screwed with something they souldnt have been screwing with and the Tuatha de Danaan may not have simply been Mystics but advanced Technologically. Also if you look at it most of these advance civilisations disappeared in one way or another.Atlantis sank into the Ocean. The Tuatha de Danaan went into the underworld to live as fairies(Yes fairies got a problum with that ;)),Ragnarok destroyed Asgard.

I believe for a good amount of time that device was considered a mystery, and only recently have we actually begun to understand where and who it came from. Interesting to know that the origins of the computer date that far back. :D

Some massive nuclear explosion or a massive solar flare sent the civilizations back to the stone age (literally)
