So is there a proper story or just a zombie killing frenzy with friends?

There is a storyline. It might not be a storyline like Max Payne or Deus Ex offered, but as far as I'm aware, it follows some sort of chronology.

I suppose it'd be somewhere in between TF2 and HL2 in terms of storyline.

Its not a singleplayer game, but each of the campaigns has an introductory 'movie' and a fair bit of inplay dialogue explaining whats meant to be happening, where your supposed to go etc, along with a little back story of each of the survivors, i expect they will do "meet the.." style videos in that respect to.

They are taking the TF2 or Portal approach. Basically your group is told by a news helicopter to get to the top of Mercy Hospital. This is roughly 2 weeks after the outbreak occurs. Then something happens and the helicopter crashes into a forest which goes through a cornfield. You are then rescued by the USA military in an APC Carrier. Then it gets sketchy after that because they go through an "urban country side" and then an airport. It's been said that the airport will have crashing planes as well. Most of the story is said randomly by characters and there are thousands of dialogue so you will find new stuff months after release. There is also stuff on walls just like Portal such as "everybody is dead at the next safehouse. Get to Mercy Hospital!".

The story isn't in your face per say.

You start off each campaign with a small briefing, but when you're playing the game, it's all passive story telling. Lines of dialogue from characters and looking at your environment reveals more.
