sup everyone Im new to Half Life 2. Just got the game last week and finished it a few minutes ago. Great game btw. I have never played HL1 and was wondering if anyone can breakdown the story for me so I will know just what these games are all about.

Also do you recommend playing HL1 now or will the change from new game to old game be unbearable?

Play HL1! the source version if you have it, if not the normal version's still cool....and the graphics still don't look all that bad, considering. It's not like playing Pong or anything.

For story explanation:

Many theories, including mine, are in here somewhere:

Riomhaire's theories and big useful glossary:
http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=74201

Regarding Combine on Xen specifically:

The only theory with a site to back it up:
http://fragfiles.org/~hlstory//

(... :| someone was going to post that last one, best to get it over with)

Those links make for some good research and fan speculation if you're interested. Bear in mind there is a great deal in HL2 (and HL1) which is only hinted at and not confirmed one way or the other.

Alot of the storyline speculation is simply speculation, and should be dismissed, at best, as well as a number of contradicting theories (Combine controlling Xen vs Combine not knowing where Xen is altogether, G-Man being an alien vs G-Man being Gordon vs G-Man being Angry Lawyer's colleagues). Your best bet is to pick up a copy of HL1, and make your own mind up.

THanks guys. I have the platinum edition which comes with five disks including HL1, opposing force and blue shift. But, I cant get it to run on windows xp. I also have a windows 98 install disk and i will use it if I have to but Id rather not...

If you register the cd-keys of the hl1 games in steam, you can down them and play through steam, which of course will work in win xp.

I think he just wanted the story line, but its better if you just play the game ur self.

Thank you guys for the advice. Those links really summed it all up. Now Im off to play!

Best choice ! Enjoy !

Good luck. :) Opposing Force is the best expansion for HL1, so play it once your done.

Personally I thought Opposing Force ruined the story, but each to their own. Good expansion though.

Simply, in Black Mesa (HL1) you caused a Resonance Cascade which caused lots of Xen stuff to cross over. You get sent to Xen and kill the Nihilanth, the leader of the Xen troops. The G-Man (just a mysterious bloke in general) then offers you a chance to work for him / die and HL2 assumes you take the former :p

HL2 is set 10 years after HL1, the Combine have conquered Earth and Xen wildlife is everywhere outside the cities. You proceed to strike a huge blow against the Combine (by blowing up the portal at the end) and not such a big blow against the Xen stuff :p

The vortigaunts are the slaves from HL1 and have been freed by you, so help you out of gratitude and the presence of a mutual goal (defeating the Combine).

G-Man is still as mysterious and confusing.

There's lots of speculation about the G-Man and the Combine-Xen relationship but nothing definate.
