Strange microphone problem

My friend borowed his microphone and I diceded to test it now.
So I connected it to my mainboard (ABIT VI7)
and went to the voice check in CSS....
but no voice recording, the bar stands still and there is no change or voice.
I checked my sound options and evrithings seems to be fine but no voice.
I tried to record something with the windows recorder but this didnt work too...
any ideas?
and it works at my friends computer.

Is your speaker profile set to have a mic port or do you have it set for (example) 5.1 that uses the Mic port for an output?

I disebled mic muting......
but it just dosent respond.
edit:
did the hardware check and it seems like it recives some sound but almost nothing....
it seems to be very silent.....
works great on my freinds computer and you can hear clearly what was recorded....
