Stuck in Black Mesa East

If anyone can help? Just past the bit where the Russian(?) shoots the headcrab behind me. I have descended down a long ladder to a contaminated area, along a tunnel, and am confronted by a large wide door with a slot halfway between roof and floor, but too small to get through. And I can't. It sounds like tennis balls being bounced on a concrete floor in there. Any clues please how to open this door?

Are you sure about where you are? Father Grigori appears in "We Don't Go To Ravenholm", and I do not recall going down any long ladders there. At one point FG shoots a headcrab behind you, then you drop down on to some planks (to your left). Follow the planks and climb in through the window. The floor of the room is partially destroyed and there is a zombie in the room below. Kill the zombie and headcrabs, drop down and crowbar your way through the boarded up doorway.

Stuck at Black Mesa East

On my list of "LOAD GAME"s I have Water Hazard, "We don't go to Ravenholm...", and Black Mesa East, where I am stuck down the mine shaft accessed by the long ladder. Did everything to locate my screenshot, but cant find where to "host it", The screenshot reference if useful is "e1_eli_020000.jpg". Maybe that's in some library somewhere. I just don't know how to host it. Maybe I've jumped out of sequence somewhat. After leaving the Water Hazard, we don't go to Ravenholm, but it seems I have no choice. Jump over the rotating slicing machine, kill the zombies and crabs. An electrified fence preventing access to some external ladders. Rush through the flames in the doorway, kill more zombies and crabs, turn off the power, return outside through the flames in the doorway, climb the ladders, leap across to the roof, the Russian appears and tells me what a great job I've done, and shoots the crab behind me. I leap back across to the landing above the ladders and return to the houses and rooms full of dead bozos, and find this ladder descending into the contaminated area. No planks to walk across to a boarded-up area.
Maybe I've left Ravenholm too early, and by backtracking, have fallen into Black Mesa East?

I think that I have worked it out now. When Father Grigori shoots the headcrab behind you, you have then retraced your steps right to the beginning of the level.
What you should have done when Grigori shoots the headcrab behind you, is face Father Grigori, look down and slightly left, and you will see some planks that are lying on a framework that is between you and the street level. You need to jump on to those planks and follow them until you can go through a window.

Yep Count Zero is right.

From the sounds of things you skipped the Black Mesa East level entirely somehow.
The sequence of levels goes:

Water Hazard
Black Mesa East
We Don't Go To Ravenholm...

I'd recommend loading Black Mesa East if you haven't played that sequence yet (it features the introduction of some great characters). But if you have played through that sequence, then follow Count Zero's directions and you should be fine.

Yes, I'm missing Black Mesa East. I leave the Water Hazard and meet up with Alex and the one-legged guy and the sus' woman scientist. Play with the Gravity Gun, Alex and Dog. The sky falls in and Dog opens the slotted door in the tunnel. I ascend the stairs and am in I believe "We don't go to Ravenholm". Should I have not followed Dog? How do I continue in Black Mesa East?

That sounds exactly like what should happen. Once you have got the grav gun and you are on your way to Ravenholm then you have finished with Black Mesa East. There is nothing else to do there, the whole chapter is just about story and getting the gg to you, and giving you some training.
