Stuck in Episode One--bugs all around

I'm stuck in Episode One. I'm playing on Lowlife (I think that's what it's called), it's still early on.

I'm in an area where there are about three bug holes (where they emerge) on the ground, and I'm going up a few levels with Alyx. I think I'm on the third level and I have to turn one of those terribly slow wheels (loss for words right now) to open a fence/gate. There are some health packs behind the fence. Every time I try to open the gate I get hit by one of those ant things and I'm forced to start again. I eventually die. I have one of the holes on the floor plugged with a car, but I don't see any other cars to plug the other ones. There is a zombie in a room just below me and I've woken him up to help with the ants but it doesn't do that much.

I'm so annoyed!

You have to plug all of the antlion holes with cars.

The first car is on the groundfloor.

The second car is on the first level in a small room (straight ahead of the plank you walk up to get to the first floor).

The last car is in a "fenced in" area. Go to the top floor by the wheel/crank you tried to open and there should be an opening (it is pretty big). Fall down into it and kill the zombie that gets woken up. Then open the gate that is in the way and use the gravity gun to blast the car out into the main area.
