Stuck in prison

How do you kill the big boss lion ant inside the prison?

The first one that I came accross on the beach I managed to kill with my shot gun first try. This one doesn't die, is there some secret way of killing it?

Run fast, stay out of his way, and shoot him a bunch of times with the shotgun (in the face, if possible). Seriously.
