im stuck at the bit after the water puzzle were you turn the valve then jump across the big wodden floaty things. once i get outside i couldn't climb the ladder so i piled up the wooden boxes then jumped onto the fence and over the planks but when i drop down there seems to be nowhere to go as both directions are dead ends. have i missed something here?

From our walk thru

More manhacks will appear; again, us the water to your advantage. After they're gone, swim down to the bottom of the room and through the large pipe. Go up to the door and up the ladder, and then look down to the bottom. You should see a row of wooden planks at the bottom. Shoot each one once to release the debris from underneath them (you may have to shoot one of the boxes to release some of it). Use the debris to jump over the water onto the other side. Go through the next corridor.

Go up the ladder and drop onto the wooden planks; drop down to the lower level, then get rid of the scanner quickly. Some combine and manhacks will appear...
So that ladder should work if you are looking at the correct one.

I'm not sure why a ladder would stop working, you could use noclip to get up to the top of it then continue (and hope there aren't other problems).

Main menu > options > keyboard > advanced > enable developers console.

While in game press ' (button under ESC) to open the console. Turn on cheats mode - sv_cheats 1

Console will confirm it is changed to 1. Then type - noclip

Now close the console and you can fly around anywhere you want. Move yourself to the ledge above the ladder (make sure you are not stuck inside any walls). Open the console and type noclip again to turn it off.

cheers for that unfortunatley it dosen't help. however the console did show that map d1_canals_05.bsp was missing which might explain the problem. do you know if there is anywere to download this seeing as a reinstall showed this to be corrupt.

Well if the map is missing it is a simple fix. Right click Halflife2 on your 'My Games' list on Steam, go to properties, click the files tab and click 'verify integrity of game cache'. Steam will check for any missing files and slot them in quickly.
