He threw back his head, and laughed hollowly at me.
"There's nothing we can do, Sam! The combine have absolute rule, they have weapons, armour, machines of war? What do we have? Some mouldy old prophacy about "The one free man". What good does that do?", he asked, swinging of his chair, in full rant now. "NOTHING!" he roared. "THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO! THEY HAVE ABSOLUTE RULE."
I stood my ground.
"I will not stand by and see this... this... Xenos," I spat, "Run us hollowly into the ground. They shall not. They will not. We cannot allow it."
He stared at me, eyes wild. "Did you not understand me, boy? There is nothing we can do." He said it softly, more kindly. "They have everything. We have nothing."
I turned, and walked through the door. And looked back at this poor, old man, with memories of days long past, and never to come again.
"We can survive." I said.
