I've had an idea for a game for about 2 years now, and I'm a relative novice at C++. What I lack in skill and talent, I believe I make up for in perserverance and determination. I've always sang my 'should'a could'a would'a's about my mod idea, but I always figured that being able to create a skillful enough team to meet the demands the game I have planned would be a virtual impossibility, and I'd have a hard time initially setting my mod idea apart from other mods that are in development in the eyes of would-be recruits for the team.
But I think it's time I gave it a shot.
I have written a 10-page outline of the mechanics involved in Styles and Skills. From this outline, I'll copy and paste the goal of the game:
Styles and Skills sets out to do what few games have done, but all have tried to do; raise the bar. The game will set out to provide a new and unique experience while providing fast, fun, and skillful gameplay.
SnS will try to offer the player the ability to make their character their own by creating a look and playstyle that is unique to them. To make very gameplay experience custom to each player would make the game stand out on its own.
Styles and Skills will give players the opportunity to show off both their style and skill by providing high-paced street fighting with various fighting techniques in stylish, cinematic presentation in a game that requires coordination, skill, and understanding of the game’s mechanics.
SnS will provide a platform for a community to converse, have fun, and compete in a way they haven’t been able to before.
_____
Now from this, I'll try and come up with a features list to look at and take in and think about.
-Advanced Fighting Game set in an urban atmosphere.
-Unique gameplay mechanics in a 3rd person behind the character environment, complete with combos, blocks, dodges, parries and special moves
-Ability to create custom characters from fighting style to stats to clothing
-6 to 8 players max to a server/fight.
-Various gameplay modes from deathmatch to teamplay to tournament modes
-Official Styles and Skills Gang System
-Official Gang Colors and Outfit
-Gang Ladders and Tournaments hosted on the SnS website
___
Now.. I'm not looking to make just a 'mod.' I want to make a game. I want the game to feel and play like something someone would pay money for, because that is the kind of quality a game of this magnitude deserves.
I think Styles and Skills in its completed form would stand out from other games because there aren't many online fighting games out there, if any really. The gameplay I have in mind is by no means 'easy' to pick up in that you really need to understand what each function's purpose is and how to keep a consistent flow to your playstyle. I'd like to think the gameplay I've come up with is similar to how the QWERTY keyboard is set up. Things are arranged in a way that your mind needs to slow down enough to think, but it's fast enough to feel natural and actual makes things faster than a simpler method.
Another thing I think will set apart SnS from other mods is its community integration. Players will be able to go to the website and see what gang's on top and who's where in terms of stats and ability. Say if a gang was on top and a member showed up in a server, they'd be known. On top of what I feel would be addictive gameplay, you'd have a reason to want to improve and keep playing, as well as meet up with friends.
Styles and Skills would be a more personal game in that ideally it'd be best played with at most 6 people fighting at once. While it can go above and beyond that, I think players would get the most enjoyment out of more personal fights. The fighting system would be able to handle both large scale and small scale fights, but I think a player would enjoy the Chess-like duality of one on one to three on three fighting rather than all out brawls. This kind of personalized play is, I think, a change of pace compared to other mods and games coming out.
I'd post the entire outline, but I don't know if displaying the integral mechanics of the game before it was officially announced would be such a good idea. I'd hate to have my gameplay concept emulated or anything like that.
I'm going to need any and all brands of help, from coders (even though I am one, I'd really like to have a 2nd to sort of show me some of the ropes and to help out) to animators to modellers to sound people to webmasters to your baby's mother.
Right now I'm just a 20 year old kid with a dream, but I think anyone who gives my idea a hard look would find this game to be worth months and possibly years of development.

NOTE:
I have heard about the BRAWL mod and I like what they have going over there. I had considered talking to Bluewolf to see if we could work something out and wouldn't mind the prospect of it as he has a developed team of good people, but I didn't want to step on anyone's toes or anything. So bluewolf, if you'd like to see what my idea would be about and you'd be open to a change of direction for you own mod, I think we might be on a closer page than you may think.
Thank you for reading this.
