I'm trying to figure out aproximately what the poly-count should be for various models at various distances.

Basic game: HL2 MOD with an averge of 16 players/map. Maps are large and provide significant cover.

Lowest computer specs=1.2ghz, 192mb DDR, GeForce 2.

Models:
Weapons
Vehicles
Players (humans)

basiclly as low as possible. Everyone is using all these really high polgons etc... in hl2 but tbh there is no point. Make the graphics as best u can with a low polgon count. I would say

vehicles 8000
player 3000-6000 depending on render distance.
weapons 3rd 200
weapons 1st 1000-1500

IchI, whose come back from being banned, has a skewed view here...

For vehicles, which LOD, you should have 8000/4000/2000 ish for your LOD models, you can proberly use less poly than that for your high detail model

Players: LOD, so somehting like 7000/3000/1000 or less.

Weapons 3rd: don't LOD, and these do not need to be highly detailed, so you can keep them low, say 1000. Really this depends on how detailed you want it to be.

Weapons 1st: Don't LOD. Valve uses 2000ish polys for thiers, so you can use anyhting upto around 3000ish, however, the lower the better.

Thanks for the numbers. I don't think I'll have any problems undercutting these numbers. And additional input would be great.

Those numbers look about right to me. However, as the others have said, always use as few as possible. That doesn't necessarily mean skimping, but just make every polygon count.
