I see about 3000 peoples download source today. It's can't be stoped.
It's big loose, i work in Nival Interactive, Russian game developer compaign. And i know how much work, need to do. To create Engine like this. I am realy want to say stop don't download it but every one just on't get right thing to stop.
It's realy bad but no one can't stop it.

I think Valve must create virus, to delete sorce files, out of all computers on the NET. (Internet).;(

I've actually been hearing about such viruses being created. Can't say much more then that because viruses, in any form and no matter how noble the cause may seem, are ILLEGAL and can get you into big, big trouble.

How would tht work exactly?

Ok peoples get to work.

I think then peoples out of Valve must create it. This virus don't kill enething of you data. Only source files of Half-Life, TF2, CS 1,2.

Illegal, even though it might be a solution. Valve themselves surely can't and won't do it, they have too much to lose.

I am not programer, nut i can say. Virus must destroy SourceFiles.
In virus must be information with names of files.
But Valve must rename all source's. Not big deal, and maybe problem solved.
But other's can rename it, it's must at least stop the epidemy of download's.

If it were known that a company went around deleting files on peoples computers, just how long do you think it would last?

Secondly how exactly are they supposed to find these people? what if they just rename the files. How do you find out who has the source code? Even checking for file sizes won't work, it's not like a binary it's just text you can easily write a script to append a few more character behind a comment at the end of each file and there goes any hope of identifying by file size or checksum.

Stupid just plain stupid.

Well, it can be a bit more simple or complex then that. Since CPP files are essentially text files, they can be searched for certain strings or expressions. Or just filenames.

Holy %#%@

It's just idea. Say something better to solve the problem.

Simply put, Valve could make the virus out of a programmer's house, send it out through kazaa (name it something like HL2 LEVEL FOR SOURCE CODE) and voila! No more source code!

Of course, if I were them, I would do it then blame it on some helpful fan (unknown person of course)

The problem with this is that code is not unique there are a lot of coding conventions out there so two completely independent programs written to do the same thing will have very similar source code.

You could have it search for enough strings that it becomes overwhelmingly probable that it is the right code, but lots of added complexity is not really something you want in a virus.

All this of course ignores the what should be obvious fact that anyone likely to actually be able to do anything with the code is almost more likely to be protected against a virus (well a propagating virus as opposed to a specific targeted attack lets not forget how this who thing stated).

That’s another point as well, for this to work it would need to be a worm not a virus per say, something that is even easier to block if you know what your doing.

Yeah, which is why it wouldn't be 100% foolproof, but what ever is?

Granted

I still think though even if technically possible it would be an immensely bad idea.

you cannot delete the engine now. it is impossible.

in 3-7 days the souce engine will be copied into CDs and sold in the black market. so find away of DSE is impossible now.

I think Microsoft should make an update patch that deletes the souce files, since it was their buggy "more holes than swiss-cheese" software that caused this. :) In fact, there's one that came out just today... heh... I wonder.

its east... all they have to do is make a smell bit of software and put it onto steam....

OK it works like anti virus software it set there with a list of names, when someone opens one of the files the program see the file name and locates where it is. all it does then is delete it..... when it know where on the PC it is, it looks to see if the rest of there then deletes them...

if its lucky u will know know whats happened and just put it down to a virus in the code and never dl it again.
